Sherburn Colliery railway station served the village of Sherburn, County Durham, England from 1844 to 1959 on the Leamside line. History The station opened as Sherburn on 19 June 1844 by the Newcastle & Darlington Junction Railway. The station was situated on the north side of the road bridge over the railway on Front Street, part of the B1283. Sherburn, County Durham
Sherburn or Sherburn Village it is a village and former civil parish in County Durham, England. It is 4 miles east of Durham. The village is located in the Sherburn division of Durham County Council and the City of Durham constituency for Westminster elections. The population of this division taken at the 2011 census was 9,108. History A settlement has existed in this location for some considerable time. Until the 19th century Sherburn was a farming village, but with the Industrial Revolution came the sinking of mines to provide coal to fuel the industries and railways to ensure its distribution. By the 1930s the two pits that were within the Parish boundaries were closed and with the demise of neighbouring collieries in the 1960s the railway lines also became redundant. The York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway (YN&BR) was an English railway company formed in 1847 by the amalgamation of the York and Newcastle Railway and the Newcastle and Berwick Railway. Both companies were part of the group of business interests controlled by George Hudson, the so-called ''Railway King''. In collaboration with the York and North Midland Railway and other lines he controlled, he planned that the YN&BR would form the major part of a continuous railway between London and Edinburgh. North Eastern Railway (United Kingdom)
The North Eastern Railway (NER) was an English railway company. It was incorporated in 1854 by the combination of several existing railway companies. Later, it was amalgamated with other railways to form the London and North Eastern Railway at the Grouping in 1923. Its main line survives to the present day as part of the East Coast Main Line between London and Edinburgh. Unlike many other pre-Grouping companies the NER had a relatively compact territory, in which it had a near monopoly. That district extended through Yorkshire, County Durham and Northumberland, with outposts in Westmorland and Cumberland.
