Sherborn is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. Located in Boston's MetroWest region, is in area code 508 and has the ZIP code 01770. As of the 2020 U.S. Census, the town population was 4,401. Sherborn shares its highly ranked public school system with the town of Dover. In addition to Dover, Sherborn is bordered by the towns of Natick, Framingham, Ashland, Millis, Holliston, and Medfield. History Primarily a farming community until the early part of the 20th century, Sherborn now is a bedroom town for Boston and the surrounding hi-tech area. Early settlement The whole Charles River valley from South Natick to the falls at Medway kept its Indian name "Boggestow"; it was sought out by the English because of the abundant marsh grass growing on the wide flood plain. Charles Davies Sherborn
Charles Davies Sherborn (30 June 1861 – 22 June 1942) was an English bibliographer, paleontologist and geologist.Shindler, 2016 His magnum opus was the compilation of the ''Index Animalium'', an 11-volume, 9,000-page work that catalogued the 444,000 names of every living and extinct animal discovered between 1758 and 1850. This work is considered the bibliographic foundation for zoological nomenclature. In addition, Sherborn authored almost 200 books, papers, and catalogs on a wide variety topics in natural history. He made important contributions to the study of microfossils and was a founding member and first president of the Society for the Bibliography of Natural History. In recognition of his endeavours he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Oxford University. Charles William Sherborn
Charles William Sherborn, (14 June 1831 – 10 February 1912) was an English engraver, who chiefly made bookplates. He has been hailed as having led the revival in copper-engraved bookplates, and came to be called the "Victorian little master". Early life and education The eldest son of Charles Sherborn, an upholsterer, and Mary Brance, he was born at Leicester Square in London. His ancestors were landed gentry, lords of the manors of Fawns and Cockbell in Bedfont; Fawns Manor was still in the possession of his fourth cousin, William Sherborn. On William's death in 1912, Charles William Sherborn dying that same year, his son, Charles Davies Sherborn, inherited the manor. The last owner was Charles Davies Sherborn's great-nephew, the conservationist Derek Sherborn. Derek Ronald Sherborn (7 May 1924 – 4 July 2004) was a British conservationist and Principal Investigator of historic buildings for the Ministry of Town and Country Planning, who played a major role in the rescue of historical properties, making a pioneering contribution to the preservation of England's architectural heritage.
