Sherard, Mississippi
Sherard is an unincorporated community located in Coahoma County, Mississippi, United States. Sherard is located along Mississippi Highway 1, west of Clarksdale. History Sherard is named for the Sherard family, who cleared the land for a plantation in 1874. The plantation originally had two cotton gins, a saw mill, and pecan processing equipment. Sherard is located on the former Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad and in 1910 was home to four general stores and the Memphis Shingle Company. A post office first began operation under the name Sherard in 1890. Sherard is served by the Coahoma County School District. Residents are served by Sherard Elementary School and Coahoma County Junior-Senior High School. A cultivar of pecan known as Sherard was developed in Sherard in 1916. Notable person * Lewis C. Baron Sherard
Lord Sherard, Baron of Leitrim, was a title in the Peerage of Ireland in 1627. The third holder of the barony would also be named Baron Harborough (1714), Viscount Sherard (1718), and Earl of Harborough (1719), with the viscountcy ending with the death of its original holder in 1732, but the other titles persisting in the family until 1859. The Sherard barony became dormant in 1931 with the death of the last known male-line family member. History The Sherard family descended from Geoffrey Sherard, of Stapleford, Leicestershire, High Sheriff of Rutland in 1468, 1480 and 1484. His son Thomas Sherard was High Sheriff of Rutland in circa 1495 and circa 1506, while in the next generation George Sherard was High Sheriff of Rutland in circa 1567. It was the grandson of this last, Sir William Sherard, of Stapleford, Leicestershire, who was elevated to the peerage in 1627. The Sherard Baronetcy, of Lopthorp in the County of Lincoln, was a title in the Baronetage of England. History It was created on 25 May 1674 for John Sherard, with remainder to his brothers and the male issue of their bodies. He died unmarried and was succeeded according to the special remainder by his younger brother, the second Baronet. The latter was also unmarried and was succeeded by another brother, the third Baronet. The title became extinct on the death of the third Baronet's son, the fourth Baronet, in 1748.
