The German Shepherd or Alsatian is a German breed of working dog of medium to large size. The breed was developed by Max von Stephanitz using various traditional German herding dogs from 1899. It was originally bred as a herding dog, for herding sheep. It has since been used in many other types of work, including disability assistance, search-and-rescue, police work, and warfare. It is commonly kept as a companion dog, and according to the Fédération Cynologique Internationale had the second-highest number of annual registrations in 2013. Shepherding is a tactic and skill in Australian rules football, a team sport. Shepherding is the act of legally pushing, bumping or blocking an opposing player from gaining possession of the ball or reaching the contest. The term originates from the word shepherd, someone who influences the movement of sheep in a paddock. Through shepherding, Australian football players are able to influence the movement of their opponents. The prevalence of shepherding is distinctive in Australian rules football as it is an illegal form of play in many other codes of football where it is subject to obstruction rules. It is completely banned in soccer. In rugby, it is illegal to tackle or obstruct any player not carrying the ball. Ice hockey allows body checking only on a player in possession (until the puck reaches any other player), as does gaelic football. Baron Shepherd, of Spalding in the County of Lincoln, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1946 for George Shepherd, who had previously served as National Agent of the Labour Party. His only son, Malcolm Newton Shepherd, 2nd Baron Shepherd the second Baron, was also a prominent Labour politician and notably served as Leader of the House of Lords. After the House of Lords Act 1999 removed the automatic right of hereditary peers to sit in the House of Lords he was given a life peerage as Baron Shepherd of Spalding, of Spalding in the County of Lincolnshire. Shepherd Center is a private, not-for profit hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.
