Shelter Island (Alaska)
Shelter Island is an island in the Alexander Archipelago, southeast of Lincoln Island and northwest of Juneau, Alaska, U.S. It trends northwest between Favorite and Saginaw channels. It was named in 1869 by Commander R. W. Meade of the United States Navy. The first European to sight the island was Joseph Whidbey, master of during George Vancouver's 1791–95 expedition, in 1794. The lake is a remnant of the ancient, massive glacial dammed lake, Lake Missoula of the era of the last interglacial. Flathead Lake is a natural lake along the mainline of the Flathead River. Shelter Island, known in Cantonese as Ngau Mei Chau () is an island located in the water body Port Shelter (Ngau Mei Hoi; literally ''Cow Tail Sea''), in the Sai Kung District, the New Territories, Hong Kong S.A.R., China. History The island appeared in a map drawn by Father Simeone Volonteri in 1866, at that time it was marked as Ngau T'au Chü (). However, there are criticisms on the accuracy of Volonteri's map in general, or for specific place name such as '' Green Hill'', which historically known as Tuen Mun Hill. There is a rock formation currently called (), which connects to the island by intertidal zone. According to a book, ''Pai'' means rock, hill or mountain that locates in water body in general in the language of the Tanka people. Shelter Island (Western Australia)
Shelter Island is approximately due west of Albany, Western Australia. It is often mistakenly referred to as Muttonbird Island, which is the much smaller island located immediately east of Shelter Island. The beach immediately west of Shelter Island is known as Muttonbird Beach, and is popular for swimming, surfing, fishing, and four wheel driving. Shelter Island is approximately off-shore from Muttonbird Beach separated by a channel that has an average depth of it is regarded as a suitable open-water dive site. The island consists of a mass of granite but has sufficient soil for plant growth and is well vegetated on top. The island supports breeding populations of flesh-footed shearwaters and little penguins as well as small populations of feral cats and black rats. Little penguins have also been seen on the island. Shelter Island is an island town in Suffolk County, New York, United States, near the eastern end of Long Island. The population was 3,253 at the 2020 census. Geography Shelter Island is nestled between the North and South Forks of Long Island. It is surrounded on three sides by Shelter Island Sound and on the fourth side by Gardiners Bay. It can be reached via ferry from Greenport to the north (an approximately eight-minute trip) or from North Haven to the south (an approximately five-minute trip). The two ferry crossings are connected by New York State Route 114, which crosses the island. Shelter Island is around 8,000 acres (32 km2) in size. Vast tracts are protected wetlands, a nature preserve marshland. Nearly one-third of the island is owned by The Nature Conservancy to be preserved in a wild state. Shelter Island is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) within the Town of Shelter Island in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 1,333 at the 2010 census. The village of Dering Harbor and the CDP of Shelter Island Heights make up the rest of the town. The community of Shelter Island is at the eastern end of Long Island and is reachable only by ferry. Many of the properties are owned by wealthy New York City residents who use the island as a weekend retreat. It is located on the north side of the island of Shelter Island, surrounding the village of Dering Harbor. The population was 1,048 at the 2010 census. Shelter Island, San Diego
Shelter Island is a neighborhood of Point Loma in San Diego, California. It is actually not an island but is connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land. It was originally a sandbank in San Diego Bay, visible only at low tide. It was built up into dry land using material dredged from the bay in 1934. It was developed in the 1950s and contains hotels, restaurants, marinas, and public parkland. Shelter Island is owned and controlled by the Port of San Diego, which also provides all police and other public services. Shelter Island businesses lease their location from the Port. Under California law, property on Shelter Island cannot be sold and permanent residences cannot be built there, because the area falls under the law governing public tidelands. The "island" is long and only a few hundred feet wide.
