Shelmaliers GAA
Shelmaliers is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Castlebridge, County Wexford, Ireland. The club was founded in 1886, with the name Shelmaliers being adopted in 1952, and fields teams in hurling, Gaelic football and camogie. Location Shelmaliers represents a parish of three centres – historic Castlebridge, Screen at the northern end, and the seaside area of Curracloe. The club is in the "over the water" area, just north of the town of Wexford. History Evidence suggests that the game of hurling had been played in the area long before the foundation of the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1884. Two years later in 1886 the club played its first game under the auspices of the association – a game of football against Our Lady's Island in October 1886. The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA; ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael ; CLG) is an Irish international amateur sports, amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes, which include the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball and rounders. Wexford Junior Hurling Championship
The Wexford Junior Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Permanent TSB Junior Hurling Championship) is an annual hurling competition contested by lower-tier Wexford GAA clubs. The Wexford County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1903. The all-time record-holders are Ferns St Aidan's, who have won the competition five times. Horeswood are the title holders (2021) defeating Kilmore in the Final. History The Wexford Junior Hurling Championship dates back to 1903. The 2020 Wexford Senior Hurling Championship was the 110th staging of the Wexford Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Wexford GAA, Wexford County Board in 1889 Wexford Senior Hurling Championship, 1889. 2014 Wexford Senior Hurling Championship
The 2014 Wexford Senior Hurling Championship was the 104th staging of the Wexford Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Wexford County Board in 1896. The championship began on 9 May 2014 and ended on 26 October 2014. Oulart–The Ballagh were the defending champions; however, they were defeated at the quarter-final stage. St Abban's Adamstown were relegated from the championship. Shelmaliers won the title following a 3–8 to 1–11 defeat of St Anne's Rathangan in a replay of the final. Eoghan O'Gara (born 24 September 1985) is a Gaelic footballer who played as a forward at senior level for the Dublin county team. O'Gara attended St. Josephs BNS primary school in Terenure. Playing career O'Gara made his Championship debut for Dublin coming on at half-time in place of Kevin McManamon. He had an immediate impact on the game, causing trouble for the Wexford defence in Dublin's comeback in the Leinster quarter final. O'Gara made a substitute appearance for Dublin in the Leinster semi-final defeat to Meath, which proved to be Dublin's biggest defeat ever to their rivals. Mick Morrissey
Mick Morrissey (6 June 1933 – 22 March 1993) was an Irish hurler from County Carlow who played as a left wing-back for the Wexford and New York senior teams. Morrissey first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty three when he first linked up with the Wexford senior team. He made his senior debut in the 1954-55 National Hurling League. Morrissey went on to play a key part for Wexford during a golden age for the team, and won two All-Ireland medals, three Leinster medals and two National Hurling League medals. Morrissey made 17 championship appearances for Wexford ending in the 1960 championship after which he emigrated to the United States. He spent a number of seasons playing with New York, then became involved in team management and coaching, serving as trainer of the New York team in the early 1970s. Séamus Hearne
Séamus Hearne (1932 - 7 November 2008) was an Irish hurler who played as a midfielder for the Wexford senior team. Born in Curracloe, County Wexford, Hearne first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Wexford minor team. He joined the senior panel during the 1951 championship. Hearne later became a regular member of the starting fifteen, and won two All-Ireland medals, three Leinster medals and two National League medals on the field of play. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on one occasion. As a member of the Leinster inter-provincial team on a number of occasions, Hearne won one Railway Cup medal. At club level he played with Ardcolm, Shelmaliers, Midleton and Blackrock, winning one championship medal. Throughout his career Hearne made 16 championship appearances.
