Sheikh Abdul Mannan
Sheikh Abdul Mannan (died 1971) was a Bangladeshi journalist who died in the Bangladesh Liberation War and is considered a "martyr" in Bangladesh. Early life Mannan was born in Kolkata, West Bengal, British Raj in the 1920s. He moved with his family to East Pakistan after the Partition of India. Career At the beginning of his career, he worked in the Daily Azad and the Daily Sangbad. He was one of the first sports journalist writing in English in East Pakistan. He was in charge of the sports desk of ''Pakistan Observer'' for over a decade. He worked as the racing correspondent of the paper. The ''Pakistan Observer'' under his leadership took a position against the importation of football players from West Pakistan for the Dhaka Football league. Mannan dubbed one team in Dhaka League as the "Makrani Eleven" for having an entire lineup made up of West Pakistani players, after the region in West Pakistan where most of players were from. Mohammedan Sporting Club (Dhaka)
Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited Dhaka, founded in 1936 at Dhaka, is one of the oldest and one of the most popular football clubs in Bangladesh, with a support base in all parts of the country. The club currently plays in the Bangladesh Premier League. History The clubs journey began in Hazaribagh. Members of the famed Nawab family of Dhaka wanted to establish a local club for the youth. As a result, Muslim Sports Club came into being in 1927. Nine years later, with Khwaja M. Ajmal as its president, it was renamed Mohammedan Sporting Club, after its more renowned predecessor the Kolkata Mohammedan. Though it was established to create enthusiasm for sports amongst the local Muslim community, the club later broke the race, class and ethnic barrier and became a crowd favorite. Purana Paltan
Paltan is a thana (precinct) of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. It is often said to be the center of Dhaka, dividing "Old Dhaka" and "New Dhaka". Paltan was made a thana in 2005 by then Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. Paltan Thana was formed on 27 June 2005 comprising part of Motijheel thana. History The name Paltan came from a cantonment of the British East India Company. The name was derived from the English word platoon, but in reality a size of battalion or regiment. Starting from Gulistan area, Purana Paltan, Purana Paltan Lane, Naya Paltan, Topkhana and up to Fulbaria rail-line, it was the cantonment of the East India Company and there were Artillery forces in Topkhana. 'Top' means cannon and Topkhana means armoury. It is a Turkish word. In the year 1840 the cantonment was transferred to Ramna, Begunbari, then to Lalbagh Fort. Mukti Bahini
The Mukti Bahini ( bn, মুক্তিবাহিনী, translates as 'freedom fighters', or liberation army), also known as the Bangladesh Forces, was the guerrilla resistance movement consisting of the Bangladeshi military, paramilitary and civilians during the Bangladesh Liberation War, War of Liberation that transformed East Pakistan into Bangladesh in 1971. They were initially called the Mukti Fauj. On 7 March 1971 Sheikh Mujibur Rahman issued a call to the people of East Pakistan to prepare themselves for an all-out struggle. Later that evening resistance demonstrations began, and the military began a full-scale retaliation with Operation Searchlight, which continued through May 1971.
