Shefford County, Quebec
Shefford County is an historical county in southern Québec, Canada. It is named after Shefford, a small town in Bedfordshire county, England of the same name and is in the Eastern Townships region of Québec. Topographically, part of the county is situated on the western foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The county contains four small lakes, Lake Waterloo near Waterloo, Lake Boivin in Granby Township, Lake Roxton in Roxton Township, and Lake Stukely in Stukely Township. All of the lakes flow into the Yamaska River, except for Lake Stukely which feeds into the St-François River, both of which flow northwards and are tributaries to the Saint Lawrence River. A prominent feature of the county is Mount Shefford in the Township of Shefford, one of a series of the Monteregian Hills that lie in a line between the Appalachian Mountains and the Saint Lawrence River. Roxton (officially ''Le Canton de Roxton'') is a township municipality (''municipalité de canton'') in the Acton Regional County Municipality, in the province of Quebec, Canada. The population as of the Canada 2011 Census was 1,093. Roxton entirely surrounds the village of Roxton Falls. Roxton and Roxton Falls are legally distinct municipalities (with separate elected officials), but the administration of both is physically located in the village of Roxton Falls. Roxton has only a few hundred fewer people than Roxton Falls, but is spread out over a much greater geographic area. Brome-Missisquoi is a regional county municipality in the Estrie region of Quebec, Canada. It lies in the Eastern Townships area. The seat is Cowansville. In 2021, it was transferred to the Estrie region from Montérégie. In Parliament it is covered by the Brome—Missisquoi federal electoral district. History In the 1980s, the RCM was formed from municipalities of historic Brome and Missisquoi counties. On January 1, 2010, the city of Bromont moved from La Haute-Yamaska Regional County Municipality to Brome-Missisquoi. La Haute-Yamaska (meaning ''The Upper Yamaska'') is a regional county municipality in the Estrie region of Quebec, Canada. Its seat is Granby. It is named for its position at the height of the Yamaska River, which cuts through its southern part. It rises at Brome Lake located in neighbouring Brome-Missisquoi Regional County Municipality. Granby, Quebec
Granby is a town in southwestern Quebec, located east of Montreal. The population as of the Canada 2021 Census was 69,025. Granby is the seat of La Haute-Yamaska Regional County Municipality. It is the second most populated city in Estrie after Sherbrooke. The town is named after John Manners, Marquess of Granby; today it is most famous for the Granby Zoo and its landmark fountain of Lac Boivin. History The territory on which Granby is found was described as natural prairies and forests composed of ash, fir, maple, hemlock and birch, there was also a small swamp a kilometre and half uphill. The area was inhabited sporadically by nomadic First Nations. In 1792, Loyalists were granted permission to colonize the Eastern Townships. Waterloo, Quebec
Waterloo ( 2021 population 4,920) is a city in the Canadian province of Quebec. It is included in La Haute-Yamaska Regional County Municipality, in the administrative area of Estrie. Completely encircled by the township of Shefford, this residential city is located within the Eastern Townships, about ninety kilometers east of Montreal. History The town was first settled in 1793 by Ezekiel Lewis, an English Loyalist supporter who was originally from Marlborough, New Hampshire. He named his location Lewis Falls and after 9 years, Captain Lewis sold his lot and moved a short distance away. The land was purchased by William Lamoure, a merchant from St-Armand who then sold it to Lazare Letourneau who in turn sold it to Hezekiah Robinson in 1822. Robinson immediately renamed Lewis Falls to Waterloo after the famous battle in which Napoleon Bonaparte was defeated. The name Waterloo was suggested by his father-in-law, Judge Knowlton.
