She Rockers
The She Rockers were a female hip hop group from London, featuring Donna 'She Roc' McConnell, Antonia 'MC Aurra' Jolly, Dupe Fagbesa and Alison Clarkson (who later found fame as Betty Boo). Career She Rockers' first release - as a trio of McConnell, Fagbesa and Clarkson - was a track on the ''Known 2 Be Down'' compilation of UK hip hop artists from West London. "Give It A Rest", the band's only single as a trio, followed on the Music of Life label, and was produced by Public Enemy's Professor Griff after the She Rockers performed an impromptu rap to Public Enemy at their local McDonald's in Shepherd's Bush, London; She Rockers also supported Public Enemy in the US. British Hip Hop
British hip hop, also known as UK hip hop or UK rap, is a genre of music, and a culture that covers a variety of styles of hip hop music made in the United Kingdom. It is generally classified as one of a number of styles of R&B/Hip-Hop. British hip hop can also be referred to as Brit-hop, a term coined and popularised mainly by ''British Vogue'' magazine and the BBC. British hip hop was originally influenced by the dub/toasting introduced to the United Kingdom by Jamaican migrants in the 1950s–70s, who eventually developed uniquely influenced rapping (or speed-toasting) in order to match the rhythm of the ever-increasing pace and aggression of Jamaican-influenced dub in the UK. Hip House
Hip house, also known as rap house or house rap, is a musical genre that mixes elements of house music and hip hop, that originated in both London, United Kingdom and Chicago, United States in the mid to late 1980s. British group the Beatmasters' "Rok da House" is known to be the very first hip house record, having been written and pressed to vinyl in August 1986. Other early hip house records by British artists include " Pump Up the Volume" by MARRS and "Beat Dis" by Bomb the Bass, both from 1987. History Minor controversy ensued in 1988 when a U.S. record called "Turn Up the Bass" by Tyree featuring Kool Rock Steady claimed it was the "first hip house record on vinyl". Simon Harris (born 28 November 1962) is a DJ, producer, remixer and electronic musician predominantly known as the founder of the hip hop record label Music of Life and producer of most of its catalogue of songs. Originally from London, Harris is a producer of sample-based breakbeat and house music. As a remixer, music label owner, and producer, Harris has worked with Pete Tong, Simon Cowell, James Brown, Prince, Joyce Sims, Fatboy Slim, Paul Oakenfold, Tony! Toni! Toné!, War, Arthur Baker, Boyz II Men, Heatwave, as well as Steve "Silk" Hurley. Originally a DJ, Harris started selling professional audio equipment in London's Tottenham Court Road, then became a club promoter. Beatmasters
The Beatmasters are an English electronic music group who gained success in the UK in the late 1980s with four top 20 hit singles. They then went on to produce and remix records for many other artists. The group's string of chart hit singles include "Burn It Up", "Hey DJ! (I Can't Dance to that Music You're Playing)", "Who's in the House" (featuring Merlin) and "Rok da House". The latter, having been recorded in 1986, is one of the earliest examples of hip house and most likely the first song of the genre. Hip house is a subgenre of house music which features rap vocals performed over a house rhythm track. Their initial success brought comparisons with pop record producers Stock Aitken Waterman, but the Beatmasters cited rival producers Coldcut as their major competitor. Merlin (rapper)
Justin Mark Boreland, better known as Merlin, is a British rapper of Jamaican descent from Brixton, London and nephew of reggae singer Smiley Culture. He was the featured vocalist on the B-side "Megablast" of the UK top-ten single "Don't Make Me Wait" by Bomb the Bass (1988) and A-side of the UK top-ten single "Who's in the House (The Hip House Anthem)" by the Beatmasters (1989). Rhythm King
Rhythm King Records Ltd was a British independent record label, founded in the mid-1980s by Martin Heath, Adele Nozedar, DJ Jay Strongman and James Horrocks. It was based in Chiswick, London. History Beginnings Starting out as an offshoot of Daniel Miller's critically acclaimed Mute Records, Rhythm King's initial focus was dance music - specifically house, acid house, acid jazz, sampling culture and hip hop/rap.
