''She Had to Say Yes'' is a 1933 American Pre-Code Hollywood, pre-Code film directed by George Amy and Busby Berkeley. It was Berkley's directorial debut. Loretta Young stars as a secretary who receives unwanted sexual advances when she is sent out on dates with her employer's clients. The film was promoted with the teaser "We apologize to the men for the many frank revelations made by this picture, but we just had to show it as it was filmed. The true story of the working girl."Doherty. pg. 131 According to pre-Code scholar Thomas Doherty, it was part of a series of movies that drew inspiration from the "real-life compromises working girls made to get and retain employment" during the Great Depression. A repeated theme in women's pictures in the Depression was the "threat of sexual violation" and the "hard necessity of risking virtue to keep a paycheck". George Amy
George Joseph Amy (October 15, 1903 – December 18, 1986) was an American film editor. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 15, 1903, and started his career at the age of 17, finding his niche at Warner Brothers in the 1930s. It was Amy's editing that was one of the main reasons Warners' films got their reputation for their fluid style and breakneck pace. He was a favorite of such top Warners directors as Michael Curtiz and Howard Hawks, and won an Academy Award for Best Film Editing for Hawks' ''Air Force'' (1943). He received Oscar nominations for Curtiz's ''Yankee Doodle Dandy'' in 1942 and Raoul Walsh's fanciful war film ''Objective, Burma!'' in 1945. Although Amy directed several shorts and a few features (including ''She Had to Say Yes'') on his own for Warners, they didn't meet with much success. Helen Ware ( Remer; October 15, 1877 – January 25, 1939) was an American stage and film actress. Early years Born to John August Remer and Elinor Maria (née Ware), Ware adopted her mother's maiden name as her professional name. She had three siblings, Ada, Richard, and John Remer. Before becoming an actress, she worked as a governess and a swimming instructor. Career Ware debuted on stage in 1899 when she was a student at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Along with other students, she was an extra in a production of ''The Little Minister''. She had a successful Broadway stage career making her first appearance in 1899 with Maude Adams, and by her 30s, she was playing the character parts for which she became famous.
