''She Couldn't Say No'' is a 1940 American comedy film directed by William Clemens and written by Earl Baldwin and Charles Grayson. The film stars Roger Pryor, Eve Arden, Cliff Edwards, Clem Bevans, Vera Lewis and Irving Bacon. It was released by Warner Bros. on December 7, 1940. Plot Wally Turnbull is a partner in a law firm, Trumbull and Johnson, where his trusty secretary Alice Hinsdale is so much in love with Wally that she put aside her own ambitions of becoming an attorney. Wally is offered a chance to represent a wealthy old man, Eli Potter, in a business transaction. It turns out Potter is being sued for breach of promise by a lady, Pansy Hawkins, who needs a good lawyer. After being shot at by Potter, Wally decides to become Patsy's lawyer instead. Not knowing Patsy has already become Wally's client, Alice pretends to be his partner Johnson and agrees to represent Potter. William Clemens (film Director)
William Clemens (September 10, 1905 – April 29, 1980) was an American film director. Born in Saginaw, Michigan, Clemens began his Hollywood career as a film editor in 1931. His first directing project was ''Man Hunt'' in 1936. His major credits include ''On Dress Parade'' with the Dead End Kids, two Perry Mason mysteries (''The Case of the Velvet Claws'' and ''The Case of the Stuttering Bishop''), three films featuring detective Tom Lawrence, a.k.a. "The Falcon," four films based on the Nancy Drew series, and ''Calling Philo Vance'' in 1940. Clemens' final project was ''The Thirteenth Hour'' in 1947. He died in Los Angeles, California in 1980. Frank Lorimer Mayo (June 28, 1889 – July 9, 1963) was an American actor. He appeared in 310 films between 1911 and 1949. Biography He was born in New York City, the son of actor Frank M. George Irving (American Actor)
George Henry Irving (October 5, 1874 – September 11, 1961) was an American film actor and director. Career Irving started his career as a theatre actor, notably as leading man to Maude Adams. He came to Hollywood in 1914 and acted in over 250 films from 1914 until 1948. Irving was initially an actor-director and directed about 35 silent films, which are mostly forgotten today. He switched exclusively to acting in the mid-1920s and became a character actor until the later 1940s. Irving usually played reputable and stern persons of authority in supporting roles. He is perhaps best known for his roles as Robert Wentworth in ''Coquette'' (1929), and as the lawyer Alexander Peabody in ''Bringing Up Baby'' (1938). Robert Ferris Taylor (March 25, 1888 – March 7, 1961) was an American film actor and vaudeville performer. Biography Taylor owned a vaudeville company, the Taylor Players. Besides his acting, Taylor sometimes sang in vaudeville programs. A 1922 newspaper article noted, "he possesses a deep baritone-basso voice". The group included his brother, Glen H. Taylor, who later became a U.S. senator from Idaho. In 1930, Taylor went to Hollywood, gaining a few appearances in films in bit parts and as an extra.
