Shauna Barbosa
Shauna Barbosa (born ca. 1988) is the author of the poetry collection ''Cape Verdean Blues'' (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2018). She was a finalist for PEN America's 2019 Open Book Award and was a 2018 Disquiet International Luso-American fellow. Early life Barbosa was born to an African-American mother and Cape Verdean father, and grew up in Roxbury, Boston, Massachusetts. Her parents met working at Polaroid. She has four siblings. At age 15, she worked at the Funky Fresh music store in Boston, which fostered her love of music and mixtapes. In high school, she reviewed albums for her school paper. Later, she worked as an intern at ''Vibe''. Camonghne Felix (pronounced ; born 1992) is an American writer, poet, and communications strategist. In 2015, she was appointed as Governor Andrew Cuomo's speechwriter, and was the first black woman and youngest person to serve in the role. Her debut poetry collection, ''Build Yourself A Boat'', was longlisted for the 2019 National Book Award. Career Poetry Felix participated in the national slam poetry festival Brave New Voices and was featured in the festival's 2010 HBO series. She published her first chapbook, ''Yolk'', in 2015. Corsino António Fortes (14 February 1933 – 24 July 2015) was a Cape Verdean writer, poet and diplomat. He served as the first Ambassador of Cape Verde to Portugal from 1975 until 1981 following his country's independence. Biography Fortes was born in Mindelo on Cape Verde's São Vicente island in 1933. Jorge Vera-Cruz Barbosa (25 May 1902 – 6 January 1971) was a Cape Verdean poet and writer. He collaborated in various reviews and Portuguese and Cape Verdean journals. The publication of his poetry anthology ''Arquipélago'' (''Archipelago'') in 1935 marked the beginning of Cape Verdean poetry. Dean Young (born 1955; died 23 August 2022) was a contemporary American poet in the poetic lineage of John Ashbery, Frank O'Hara, and Kenneth Koch.
