Shaun Rubenstein
Shaun Rubenstein (born 5 November 1983 in Johannesburg, Gauteng) is a South African canoer and Olympian. Career As a junior canoeist, Rubenstein competed in all forms of the sport, from sprints to river marathons. He was a member of the South African junior sprint and flat-water marathon teams, competing internationally. His best junior result was at the 2001 World Marathon Champs where he won a bronze medal in the K-1 event. He has been competing internationally at senior level since 2002. Canoe Marathon
Canoe marathon is a paddling sport in which athletes paddle a kayak (double-bladed paddle) or canoe (single-bladed paddle) over a long distance to the finish line. The International Canoe Federation states the standard distances are at least without an upper limit, while short distance races are between , and . Many events are raced down sections of river, including currents or portages around obstacles. Some events attract thousands of competitors and are staged over several days. The men's K-1 1000 metres competition in canoeing at the 2008 Summer Olympics took place at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park in Beijing on 22 August. The K-1 event is raced in single-person kayaks. Competition consists of three rounds: the heats, the semifinals, and the final. All boats compete in the heats. The top finisher in each of the three heats advances directly to the final, while the next six finishers (places 2 through 7) in each heat move on to the semifinals. The top three finishers in each of the two semifinals join the heats winners in the final. The men's K-1 500 metres competition in canoeing at the 2008 Summer Olympics took place at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park in Beijing. The K-1 event is raced in single-person kayaks. This would be the last time the event would take place at the Summer Olympics. On 13 August 2009, it was announced by the International Canoe Federation that the men's 500 m events would be replaced by 200 m events at the 2012 Summer Olympics with one of them being K-1 200 m for the women. ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships is an International Canoe Federation competition in canoe marathon in which athletes compete over long distances. The race usually starts and ends at the same place, and includes portages. Race categories vary by the number of athletes in the boat, the length of the course, and whether the boat is a canoe or kayak. In a kayak, the paddler is seated in the direction of travel, and uses a double-bladed paddle.
