Thomas Sharpe (politician)
Thomas Sharpe (14 March 1866 – 10 May 1929) was a Canadian politician, the 20th Mayor of Winnipeg from 1904 to 1906. Sharpe was born in County Sligo, Ireland and worked as a bank clerk in his teens. He moved to Canada in 1885 initially working in Toronto as a pavement contractor, then in 1892 moved to Winnipeg. He was a Winnipeg city alderman since 1899 before becoming mayor. When a rise in cases of typhoid fever in Winnipeg was discovered in 1904 by the municipal Department of Health, mayor Sharpe responded with an aggressive program to develop and enforce sewage and water services. His work as mayor also led to the establishment of Winnipeg's first Board of Control in 1906. John William Sharpe (9 December 1866 – 19 June 1936) was a bowler who was George Lohmann's partner in the formidable Surrey sides that dominated the first years of the ''official'' cricket County Championship. However, because softer and more primitive wickets meant backup bowlers were often unnecessary, Sharpe could never get into form once William Lockwood began developing as a bowler late in 1891, and his county career was, for his time, quite short despite some notable successes in Australia. Though born at Ruddington in Nottinghamshire to the cricketer Samuel Sharpe, Sharpe was overlooked by his native county in the 1880s when bowlers such as Shaw and Attewell could do everything needed to win matches, and he qualified for Surrey in the late 1880s. Harry Wetherherd Sharpe (14 August 1901 – 8 July 1950) was an English first-class cricketer and Royal Navy officer. Born at Wolstanton, Staffordshire in August 1901, Sharpe served in the Royal Navy. He was commissioned shortly after the First World War and by September 1921, he was a sub-lieutenant. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in September 1923. Sharpe made three appearances in first-class cricket for the Royal Navy in 1929, playing against the Marylebone Cricket Club, the British Army cricket team and the Royal Air Force. Playing as a wicket-keeper, he scored 35 runs and took six catches and made three stumpings. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant commander in September 1931 and later served in the Second World War. Duncan Albert Sharpe (born 3 August 1937) is a Pakistani former cricketer who played in three Test matches in 1959–60. Sharpe is of Anglo-Indian heritage, and was the third Christian to play Test cricket for Pakistan. Dougie Sharpe (1926–1974) was a Scottish footballer who played for Queen of the South from the town of Dumfries. Early years Dougie Sharpe was a native of New Abbey. He played for St Michael's Primary School team in Dumfries and then Dumfries Academy before joining local amateur side Greystone Rovers. In the last football season before World War II Sharpe joined Queen of the South on amateur forms. However the war meant his football career was put on hold as he joined the RAF serving in North Africa. Queen of the South Sharpe re-joined Queens in 1946 after World War Two ended on professional forms. Sharpe was one of the finest full backs to have played for the football club. Bayard Heston "Bud" Sharpe (1881-1916) was a Major League Baseball first baseman/outfielder. He played Major League baseball in parts of two seasons – 1905 and 1910. Sharpe was born on August 6, 1881, in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He batted left-handed and threw right-handed, and his height and weight are unknown. Sharpe chose to attend Penn State University. On April 14, 1905, at the age of 23, Sharpe made his big league debut with the Boston Beaneaters. In 46 games that year, he batted .182 in 170 at-bats. The next chance Sharpe got to play in the big leagues was with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1910.
