Sharon G. Lee
Sharon Gail Lee (born December 8, 1953) is an American lawyer and jurist who served as a justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court from 2008 to 2023. She was appointed to the court by Governor Phil Bredesen. She was elected by state-wide vote in 2010, 2014, and 2022 Tennessee elections, 2022. Early life and education Lee was born in Knoxville, Tennessee and raised in Madisonville, Tennessee, Madisonville. She graduated from Webb School of Knoxville in 1971. After attending Vanderbilt University, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Tennessee in 1975. She continued her education at the University of Tennessee College of Law, graduating in 1978. Career From 1978 to 2004, Lee worked in private practice as an attorney in Madisonville. Tennessee Supreme Court
The Tennessee Supreme Court is the ultimate judicial tribunal of the state of Tennessee. Roger A. Page is the Chief Justice. Unlike other states, in which the state attorney general is directly elected or appointed by the governor or state legislature, the Tennessee Supreme Court appoints the Tennessee Attorney General. Structure The Tennessee State Constitution, adopted in 1870, calls for five justices, no more than two of whom may come from any one of the state's three Grand Divisions (East Tennessee, Middle Tennessee, and West Tennessee) in order to prevent regional bias. For the same purpose, the court is required to convene alternately in Knoxville, Nashville, and Jackson. In recent years this provision has been regarded as permissive rather than restrictive. Tennessee Court Of Appeals
The Tennessee Court of Appeals (in case citation, Tenn. Ct. App.) was created in 1925 by the Tennessee General Assembly as an intermediate appellate court to hear appeals in civil cases from the Tennessee state trial courts. Appeals of judgments made by the Court of Appeals may be made to the Tennessee Supreme Court. Judges The Court has twelve judges who sit on three-judge panels in Jackson, Knoxville, and Nashville. Judges are chosen via the Tennessee Plan: they are elected every eight years, and must be evaluated prior to the election in order to keep voters informed. If a vacancy occurs between election cycles (for example, if a judge dies or retires), the 17-member Tennessee Judicial Selection Commission interviews applicants and recommends three candidates to the governor.
