Sharon Finnan
Sharon Louise Finnan-White ( Finnan, born 7 September 1967) is a former Australian netball player and a two-time winner of the INF Netball World Cup with the Australian national netball team. Finnan was born in the inner-Sydney suburb of Surry Hills, New South Wales. She played for the New South Wales Under-21 team and was invited to attend the Australian Institute of Sport program in 1988. She was first selected to play for the national team in the 1990 Commonwealth Games and retired from netball in 2000. , Finnan-White lives in Townsville. In the 1992 Queen's Birthday Honours list, she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia. Surry Hills is an inner-city suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Surry Hills is immediately south-east of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of the City of Sydney. Netball is a ball sport played on a court by two teams of seven players. It is among a rare number of sports which have been created exclusively for female competitors. The sport is played on indoor and outdoor netball courts and is specifically played in schools. Netball is most popularly played in Commonwealth nations. A common misunderstanding of the sport's origins has resulted in the mistaken belief that netball was created to prevent women from playing basketball. However, the sport is the result of Clara Baer's misinterpretation of its rules. Baer had asked James Naismith, the Canadian inventor of basketball, to send her a copy of the rules, and Baer's errors resulted in what marked the beginning of the development of a separate sport.
