Sharif D Rangnekar
Sharif D Rangnekar is a communications consultant, a former journalist and human rights activist. He is the ex-CEO and ex-chairman of Integral PR. Sharif has been the chairperson and President of the Public Relations Consultants Association of India (PRCAI). Sharif is also the founder of Friends of Linger - a concept band. The band released two songs ''Head Held High'' which is dedicated to the LGBTQ community in India, and ''Miss you'', portraying a love story between two gay men. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) gave ''Miss you'' an A certificate, and found 10 seconds of video objectionable. The Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT) later rescinded the directive from CBFC. Rangnekar published his first book Straight to Normal with Rupa Publications. A human rights defender or human rights activist is a person who, individually or with others, acts to promote or protect human rights. They can be journalists, environmentalists, whistleblowers, trade unionists, lawyers, teachers, housing campaigners, participants in direct action, or just individuals acting alone. They can defend rights as part of their jobs or in a voluntary capacity. As a result of their activities, human rights defenders (HRDs) are often subjected to reprisals including smears, surveillance, harassment, false charges, arbitrary detention, restrictions on the right to freedom of association, physical attack, and even murder. In 2020, at least 331 HRDs were murdered in 25 countries. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is a statutory film-certification body in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of India. It is tasked with "regulating the public exhibition of films under the provisions of the Cinematograph Act 1952." The Cinematograph Act 1952 outlines a strict certification process for commercial films shown in public venues. Films screened in cinemas and on television may only be publicly exhibited in India after certification by the board and edited. Certificates and guidelines The board currently issues four certificates. Saleem Kidwai (7 August 1951 – 30 August 2021) was a medieval historian, gay rights activist, and translator. Kidwai was a professor of history at Ramjas College, University of Delhi until 1993 and thereafter an independent scholar. Early life and education Saleem Kidwai was born 7 August 1951, in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. His family and relatives owned extensive amounts of land in the area. He knew he was gay when he was in his late teens. When he was 17 years old, he moved to the city of Delhi, in part because he knew that living in a small town would significantly constrain his ability to live openly as a gay man.
