Shaquille Johnson
Shaquille Johnson (born May 2, 1993) is a Canadian football wide receiver for the Ottawa Redblacks of the Canadian Football League (CFL). University and junior football Johnson began his U Sports football, university football career with the McGill Redmen in 2012 CIS football season, 2012 and was awarded the Peter Gorman Trophy as the rookie of the year. He sat out for a year to help his mother, who was raising three other children on her own, during which time he played for the GTA Grizzlies of the Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL). He then went on to play for the Western Mustangs football, Western Mustangs of the University of Western Ontario and the London Beefeaters of the CJFL. Johnson, who started playing competitive football in grade 10, credits a football camp at the University of Pittsburgh in his senior year of high school with helping him to realize he had the skills to succeed in the sport. In gridiron football, defensive backs (DBs), also called the secondary, are the players on the defensive side of the ball who play farthest back from the line of scrimmage. Hakeem Johnson (born June 14, 1994) is a professional Canadian football defensive back who is currently a free agent. He was most recently a member of the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League (CFL). Junior career Following his high school playing career, Johnson played in the Canadian Junior Football League for the London Beefeaters from 2014 to 2015. University career Johnson played U Sports football for the Western Mustangs from 2016 to 2018. He was part of the 2017 Vanier Cup championship team where he was named an OUA second-team all-star that year. However, he suffered an ACL injury in the 2017 Yates Cup victory over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, which kept him sidelined for the entire 2018 season. In sports, the practice squad, also called the taxi squad or practice roster, is a group of players signed by a team but not part of their main roster. Frequently used in gridiron football, they serve as extra players during the team's practices, often as part of the scout team by emulating an upcoming opponent's play style. Because the players on the practice squad are familiar with the team's plays and formations, the practice squad serves as a way to develop inexperienced players for promotion to the main roster. This is particularly important for professional gridiron football teams, which do not have formal minor league farm team affiliates to train players.
