Levantine Arabic, also called Shami (autonym: or ), is a group of mutually intelligible vernacular Arabic varieties spoken in the Levant, in Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, and Turkey (historically in Adana, Mersin and Hatay only). With over 44 million speakers, Levantine is, alongside Egyptian, one of the two prestige varieties of spoken Arabic comprehensible all over the Arab world. Levantine is not officially recognized in any state or territory. Although it is the majority language in Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria, it is predominantly used as a spoken vernacular in daily communication, whereas most written and official documents and media in these countries use the official Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), a form of literary Arabic only acquired through formal education that does not function as a native language. Shaqra (also spelt Chaqra, Chakra or even Chacra in French spellings; ar, شقرا []), officially Chaqra and Doubay ( ar, شقرا ودوبيه ''Shaqra wa Dubay''), is a local authority in southern Lebanon, 116 km from Beirut; located in the Bint Jbeil District. It consists of two parts: the village ''Chaqra''; while ''Doubay'' (or ''Qal'at ad-Dubba''), located about 4 km west of the village, is a castle dating at least to the Crusader era. Shaqra's inhabitants are called the Shaqrawis (French spelling: Chaqraouis). Geography The town is bounded to the northeast by Houla, to the east by Meiss Ej Jabal, to the southeast by Muhajbib, to the north by Majdel Selem, to the west by Safad-El-Batikh and Baraachit. Shagra ( ar, شقراء; also known as Ash Shagra and Shaqra) is a settlement in Qatar, located in the municipality of Al Wakrah. It was previously located in Mesaieed Municipality before the municipality was incorporated in Al Wakrah Municipality. It is a highly undeveloped area, consisting mainly of open desert. Of its 497.2 square km area, only 46 square km of land is under use. Residential units occupy 2% of its land, commercial and industrial establishments occupy 10%, and "other" (including under-construction) areas account for the remaining 88% of developed land. Shaqra ( ar, شقرا) is a Syrian village in Izra District in Daraa Governorate. According to the Syria Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Shaqra had a population of 487 in the 2004 census. History In 1596, Shaqra appeared in the Ottoman tax registers named Saqra; part of the '' nahiya'' of ''Bani Bani Kilab'' in the Hauran Sanjak. It had an entirely Muslim population consisting of 12 households and 7 bachelors.
