Shane McGovern (jockey)
Shane McGovern (born 1992) is an Irish hurler who played as a goalkeeper with the Westmeath senior team. Born in Crookedwood, County Westmeath, McGovern first played competitive hurling during his schooling at Coláiste Mhuire in Mullingar. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of nineteen when he first linked up with the Westmeath under-21 team. McGovern made his senior debut during the 2012 championship. Crookedwood () is a small village in County Westmeath on the R394 regional road. Historically it was called ''Taghmon'' (), after the townland it occupies. Geography Overlooked by the dominating hill of Knockeyon to the north, the village rests between the pine-covered hills as they roll down towards Lough Derravaragh, and located about 8 km north of Mullingar, at the south-eastern tip of the Lough. Similar to Lough Lene, in Collinstown, the nearby Lough Derravaragh fishing interests are also promoted by the Crookedwood community. Transport Bus Éireann route 447 provides a link to Mullingar on Thursdays only. The nearest rail service can be accessed at Mullingar railway station approximately 11km distant. The Westmeath County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Coiste Chontae na hIarmhí) or Westmeath GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Westmeath. Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. Mullingar
Mullingar ( ; ) is the county town of County Westmeath in Ireland. It is the third most populous town in the Midland Region, with a population of 20,928 in the 2016 census. The Counties of Meath and Westmeath Act 1543 proclaimed Westmeath a county, separating it from Meath. Mullingar became the administrative centre for County Westmeath. The town was originally named ''Maelblatha'', and takes its modern name from a mill noted in the legend of Colman of Mullingar. Traditionally a market town serving the large agricultural hinterland, Mullingar remains a significant commercial location. 2012 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship
The 2012 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 125th staging of the All-Ireland hurling championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. The draw for the 2012 fixtures took place on 6 October 2011. The championship began on 19 May 2012 and ended on 30 September 2012. Kilkenny were the defending champions and successfully retained their title following a 3–22 to 3–11 victory over Galway in a replay of the final. Teams A total of fourteen teams contested the championship, including all of the teams from the 2011 championship. There were no new teams entering the championship. Laois and Westmeath were the first teams to exit the 2011 championship, however, there was no relegation play-off. Both teams contested the 2012 championship.
