History Located in the village of Mucklagh, on the Tullamore- Birr road, Shamrocks GAA Club was founded on 24 March 1992 following an amalgamation of the St. Carthage's and Mucklagh clubs. It followed on from the formation of a Shamrocks underage club in 1992. Shamrocks enjoyed a successful season in 2000, winning the Offaly U21AFC title as well as the first of three Offaly IHC titles. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. Tullamore
Tullamore (; ) is the county town of County Offaly in Republic of Ireland, Ireland. Birr (; ga, Biorra, meaning "plain of water") is a town in County Offaly, Ireland. Between 1620 and 1899 it was called Parsonstown, after the Parsons family who were local landowners and hereditary Earls of Rosse. The Offaly Intermediate Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested by mid-tier Offaly GAA clubs. The Offaly County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1929. The national media covers the competition.
