Shamrock Bowl XXI
Shamrock Bowl XXI was played on July 29, 2007 at UL Sports Ground, Limerick to decide the Irish American Football League ( IAFL) champion following the 2007 regular season. This Shamrock Bowl hosted two teams from the IAFL South division, the University of Limerick Vikings and the Cork Admirals. The Vikings won the first Shamrock Bowl title in their team history, previously losing their last two in 2002 and 2006. This was the Cork Admirals' first Shamrock Bowl appearance. Belfast Trojans
The Belfast Trojans are an American Football team formed in January 2006, and have competed in the Irish American Football League, IAFL since 2007 playing NCAA rules in full contact. The Belfast Trojans are the current national champions, after winning Shamrock Bowl XXXIII. The team currently train and play their home matches at Belfast Harlequins Club located at Deramore Park. The Belfast Trojans are the only Irish team to have a dedicated American Football field at their facility. Statue Of Liberty Play
The Statue of Liberty is a trick play in American football named after the Statue of Liberty. Execution of the play Although many variations of the play exist, the most common involves the quarterback taking the snap from the center, dropping back, and gripping the ball with two hands as if he were to throw. He then places the ball behind his back with his non-throwing hand, while pretending to throw to one side of the field. While his arm is still in motion during the fake throw, he hands the ball off behind his back to a running back or a wide receiver in motion, who runs the football to the opposite side of the field. The objective is to trick the defense out of position, leaving them unable to catch up with the runner as he moves in the direction opposite to the fake. Fullback (American Football)
A fullback (FB) is a position in the offensive backfield in gridiron football, and is one of the two running back positions along with the halfback. Fullbacks are typically larger than halfbacks and in most offensive schemes the fullback's duties are split among power running, pass catching, and blocking for both the quarterback and the other running back. University Of Limerick Vikings
The University of Limerick Vikings are the American football team from the University of Limerick in Limerick, Ireland. The team currently competes in the American Football Ireland Division One. The Vikings have won three IAFL Shamrock Bowl titles – in 2007, 2008 and 2009 and the Atlantic Cup in 2010. The Vikings' all-time record is 54–30–4 (0.580). History 1999–2006 Established in 1999, the team played mostly flag football until late 2001, when they joined the IAFL winter league. Dublin Rebels
The Dublin Rebels are the most successful team in the history of the Irish American Football League. They have earned nine national championship wins (Shamrock Bowl XV, XVII, XVIII, XIX, XX, XXIV, XXV, XXX, XXXI), four league titles, three European crowns, and have registered an undefeated season twice; once in 2006 and again in 2010. Belfast Bulls
The Belfast Bulls were an American football team based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Overview Coached by HC Buttermilk Thompson, the team was founded in 2002. The Belfast Bulls were formed late in 2002 by Chris Mitchell but in 2007 the team was led by the combined experience of Head Coach Rod Thompson, Defensive Coaches Mark Helferty and Marty McKeever, Offensive Coaches Paul Orr and John Savage. Momentum was built as the Bulls won their first four matches and established the club as a legitimate future contender for the Shamrock Bowl title - the biggest prize in the IAFL. Although playing 8-a-side rules for the first season, it was clear that their talent and drive were a great base to improve on and achieve playing in the 11-a-side league. Irish American Football League
American Football Ireland (AFI) is the National Governing Body for American football for Ireland and Northern Ireland. Founded in 1984 the AFI is entirely volunteer run and all American football played in Ireland is played at an amateur level. History 1980s and 1990s The first Shamrock Bowl game was played in 1986 between the Craigavon Cowboys and the Dublin Celts. The Cowboys won the first title played in Dublin. The Celts then went on to be the number 1 team in Ireland for the next 10 years, winning the Shamrock Bowl 5 times.
