Shalimar Express (Pakistan)
Shalimar Express ( ur, ) is a passenger train operated daily by Pakistan Railways between Karachi and Lahore. The trip takes approximately 18 hours and 40 minutes to cover a published distance of , traveling along a stretch of the Karachi–Peshawar Railway Line, Shahdara Bagh–Chak Amru Branch Line and Wazirabad–Narowal Branch Line. The train named after the historic Shalimar Gardens (Lahore), Shalimar Gardens in Lahore. History The Shalimar Express was inaugurated in 1979 by the President of Pakistan, President Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq. The train at that time only consisted of 2 parlour coaches and had only two stops and covered the distance from Karachi to Lahore in 16 hours. Pakistan Railways suspended Shalimar Express on 27 July 2010 because it was running in loss. Sheikhupura ( pa, ; ur, ) also known as Qila Sheikhupura, is a city in the Pakistani province of Punjab, Pakistan, Punjab. Founded by the Mughal Empire, Mughal Emperor Jahangir, Jehangir in 1607, Sheikhupura is the List of most populous cities in Pakistan, 16th largest city of Pakistan by population and is the headquarters of Sheikhupura District. Raiwind Junction railway station (Urdu and pa, ) is located in Raiwind town, Lahore district of Punjab province, Pakistan. It serves as the junction between the Karachi–Peshawar Railway Line and Lodhran–Raiwind Branch Line. It is one of the sub-urban stations of Lahore which are served by commuter trains. Many commuters use this station to get access to the city of Lahore. History In War of 1965, Raiwind railway station was a hub of logistic and transport efforts of the 1st Armoured Division which was attacking Khemkaran in India. The station was subjected to frequent attacks by the Indian Air Force. According to Indian pilots, Raiwind station was easy to find as they just had to follow the south bound railway line until it reached Raiwind. It was reconstructed in 2016.
