Almond
The almond (''Prunus amygdalus'', syn. ''Prunus dulcis'') is a species of tree native to Iran and surrounding countries, including the Levant. The almond is also the name of the edible and widely cultivated seed of this tree. Within the genus ''Prunus'', it is classified with the peach in the subgenus ''Amygdalus'', distinguished from the other subgenera by corrugations on the shell (endocarp) surrounding the seed. The fruit of the almond is a drupe, consisting of an outer hull and a hard shell with the seed, which is not a true nut. ''Shelling'' almonds refers to removing the shell to reveal the seed. Almonds are sold shelled or unshelled. Blanched almonds are shelled almonds that have been treated with hot water to soften the seedcoat, which is then removed to reveal the white embryo. Ayelet Shaked (; he, אַיֶּילֶת שָׁקֵד; born 7 May 1976) is an Israeli politician, activist, and software engineer currently serving as Minister of Interior. She served as a member of the Knesset for The Jewish Home from 2013 to 2018, after which she became a member of the New Right. She formerly represented the Yamina alliance in the Knesset. She was Minister of Justice from 2015 to 2019. Although until 2018 she was representing a religious party, Shaked identifies as a secular politician. Emmanuel Shaked
Emmanuel Shaked ( he, עמנואל שקד; August 15, 1930 – September 20, 2018) was an Israeli Brigadier General. He served as commander of the Paratroopers and Infantry Corps. Military career Emmanuel Shaked was born and raised in Jerusalem. He joined the Palmach in 1947. He served in the 5th battalion of Harel Brigade and fought in Israel's 1948 Arab-Israeli War. After the war he became an infantry officer after completing Officer Candidate School and served in Givati Brigade. In 1955, Shaked participated in a deep reconnaissance patrol to obtain intelligence in the Sinai Peninsula. For his part in the operation he was decorated with the Medal of Distinguished Service. Afterwards he transferred to the Paratroopers Brigade and fought in the 1956 Sinai War. Later he served as the commander of 890 "Efe" (Echis) paratroop battalion. Gershon Shaked
Gershon Shaked ( he, גרשון שקד) (1929–2006) was an Israeli scholar and critic of Hebrew literature. Biography Gerhard Mandel (later Gershon Shaked) was born in Vienna, Austria. He immigrated to Mandate Palestine alone in 1939, and was later followed by his parents. He attended Gymnasia Herzliya in Tel Aviv. He hebraicized his surname to "Shaked"(almond). He was married to Malka, and had two daughters. Shaked's major oeuvre is his Hebrew Narrative Fiction: 1880–1980, a series of five volumes that were published between 1977 and 1998. In these volumes he coined the term "The Zionist super-plot" and offered a broad perspective on the modern Hebrew literary system, its inner logic and development. Moshe Shaked
Moshe Shaked (February 21, 1945 - October 28, 2014) was an American mathematician and statistician. He was a student at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and at the University of Rochester, where he completed his Ph.D. in 1975, under Albert W. Marshall. Shaked held various positions at the University of New Mexico, the University of British Columbia, and at Indiana University. He became a full professor of mathematics at the University of Arizona in 1986, and he was a Professor Emeritus at Arizona since 2013. Shira Shaked
Shira Shaked (Hebrew: שירה שקד; born 1981) is an Israeli concert pianist and musician. Early life Shaked was born in Tel Aviv, and started to play piano since the age of 4. Between 1989 and 1999 she studied with Adina Wertheim at the Israel Conservatory of Music Tel Aviv, where she graduated with honors in 1999. She served in the Israel Defense Forces between 1999 and 2001 as an "Excelled Musician". Tal Shaked is an American chess grandmaster who is best known for winning the World Junior Championship in 1997. Shaked learned the game at the age of seven, and developed his chess skills in the scholastic chess organizations of Tucson, Arizona. As a junior, Shaked won several national scholastic championships, including the 1987 National Primary Championship, the 1990 National Elementary Championship, the 1991 National K-8 Championship, the 1992 National K-8 Championship, the 1992 U.S. Cadet (under 16) Championship, and the 1995 U.S. Junior (under 20) Championship; he also won the 1995 National Open. Uri Shaked (Hebrew: אורי שקד; born: 15 June 1943) is an Israeli professor of Electrical Engineering in the Engineering Faculty at Tel Aviv University, specializing in control theory of uncertain systems. In 2017 he was awarded the Israel Prize for engineering research. Early life and education Uri Shaked was born in Petah Tikva, Israel. Ziki Shaked ( he, ציקי שקד; born 1955) is an Israeli captain, sailing instructor, and founder of the school of sailing in Eilat.
