Shake City, California
Shake City is an archaic placename in Mendocino County, California. It is located on the California Western Railroad west-northwest of Willits, at an elevation of 528 feet (161 m). Circa 1916, a kind of logging operation called a bark camp was located at or near Shake City. For a handful of years in the mid-1930s, the settlement supported a Mendocino County baseball team called the Shake City Loggers. During the Great Depression years there was enough activity at the logging camp that it attracted vagrants: one unemployed man was charged with robbing a cabin near Shake City, and an "unknown tramp" walking from Fort Bragg was killed on the railroad tracks. Famed forestry professor Emanuel Fritz Emanuel Fritz (1886-1988) was an American forestry specialist. He worked in the field of California forestry for over 70 years. The California Western Railroad , AKA Mendocino Railway popularly called the Skunk Train, is a rail freight and heritage railroad transport railway in Mendocino County, California, United States, running from the railroad's headquarters in the coastal town of Fort Bragg to the interchange with the Northwestern Pacific Railroad at Willits. The CWR runs steam and diesel-powered trains and rail motor cars through Redwood forests along Pudding Creek and the Noyo River. Along the way, the tracks cross some 30 single bridges and trestles and pass through two deep mountain tunnels. Willits (formerly Little Lake and Willitsville) is a city in Mendocino County, California, United States. It is located about north-northwest of Ukiah, at an elevation of . The population was 4,988 at the 2020 census. Willits is at the center of Mendocino County and at the beginning of the county's extensive redwood forests as approached by Highway 101 from the south. The Pomo tribe lived in the area before the settlers came, and the Sherwood Valley Rancheria of Pomo Indians of California is headquartered just west of Willits. Emanuel Fritz (1886-1988) was an American forestry specialist. He worked in the field of California forestry for over 70 years. Upon his death, Fritz was the oldest professor in the history of the University of California. Fritz was known as "Mr. Redwood," in academic and conservation circles. Early life and education Emanuel Fritz was born in 1886 in Baltimore, Maryland. He graduated in 1908 with a degree in mechanical engineering from Cornell University. After graduation, he worked at Baltimore Polytechnic University as a professor. In 1912, he left the university to pursue a master's degree in forestry at Yale University, which he earned in 1914. Career After graduation from Yale, Fritz worked in forestry in New Hampshire. In 1915, he joined the U.S. Forest Service, where he worked in Montana and Arizona.
