Shahida Rahman
Shahidun Nessa Rahman ( bn, শহীদুন নেসসা রহমান; née Karim bn, করিম; born 14 December 1971), commonly known by her pseudonym Shahida Rahman, is an English author, writer and publisher. She is best known as the author of ''Lascar (book), Lascar''. Early life Rahman was born in Mill Road Maternity Hospital, Mill Road, Cambridge, and brought up in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England. She is of British Bangladeshi, Bangladeshi descent and both her parents are from Fenchuganj Upazila, Fenchuganj, Sylhet District. Her late father, Abdul Karim, was orphaned at a young age and moved to Cambridge from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) in 1957 and her mother, Fultera Banoo Karim, arrived in 1963. Rahman has two older brothers, and her father was a restaurateur. Writing career Rahman writes historical fiction, non-fiction and short stories. Since 2003, Rahman has been a freelance writer. Lascar (book)
Lascar (novel) is a 2012 Historical fiction, historical novel written by Shahida Rahman about an East Indian orphan who leaves poverty-stricken Bengal in Presidencies and provinces of British India, 19th-century India by becoming a lascar and his extended stay in Victorian era, Victorian London. Plot summary Sylhetis, Sylheti orphans Ayan Miah and his elder brother Kazi are constantly reminded by their mission teachers of their low caste background and how their aim in life should be to become 'respectable'. Ayan's elder brother develops cancer, due to the incessant chewing of Areca nut, betel nuts, this motivates Ayan to join the seaman (as his father did) in order to earn money and better his brother's health. Circalit
Circalit is an online community for writers, screenwriters, agents and producers. It mediates between industry professionals and individuals, and also provides a forum for writers to discuss each other's work. It was " beled as the first ever social networking site for screenwriters" by Movie Maker website, and dubbed the 'Facebook for screenwriters'. Recently, Circalit has partnered the website with The Script Factory, which has links to both Disney and Sony Pictures. History Circalit was founded by a group of University College London students in February 2010. The CEO came up with the idea while working in a film production studio, noticing scripts he enjoyed that were ignored. In 2011 the company won the UCL Bright Ideas award. Channel S is a UK-based, free-to-air television channel targeting the British Bangladeshi community. The channel was established on 16 December 2004 by Mahee Ferdous Jalil, a Bangladeshi businessman in London. On Sky it at first had a timesharing deal with ATN Global, and then in 2005 began to broadcast for 24 hours, 7 days a week; it is currently available on Sky channel 777. The channel claims to be the "Voice of British Bangladeshis across the world", showing programmes suiting community needs. Its slogan is "Working for the community". The television station is based at Prestige House in Walthamstow, north-east London. It broadcasts programmes in Standard Bengali, Sylheti and a few in British English. The Labour Party is a political party in the United Kingdom that has been described as an alliance of social democrats, democratic socialists and trade unionists. The Labour Party sits on the centre-left of the political spectrum. In all general elections since 1922, Labour has been either the governing party or the Official Opposition.
