Silverchair were an Australian Rock music, rock band, which formed in 1992 as Innocent Criminals in Newcastle, New South Wales, with Ben Gillies on drums, Daniel Johns on vocals and guitars, and Chris Joannou on bass guitar. The group got their big break in mid-1994 when they won a national demo competition conducted by SBS (Australian TV channel), SBS TV show ''Nomad'' and ABC radio station Triple J. The band was signed by Murmur (record label), Murmur and were successful in Australia and internationally. Silverchair have sold over 10 million albums worldwide. Silverchair have won more ARIA Music Awards than any other artist in history, earning 21 wins from 49 nominations. ''Frogstomp'' is the debut studio album by Australian alternative rock band Silverchair. It was released on 27 March 1995, when the band members were only 15 years of age, by record label Murmur. The album features the band's commercially most successful single, " Tomorrow". Recording ''Frogstomp'' was recorded in nine days. When asked if the record was made live in the studio, singer and guitarist Daniel Johns said: Yeah, that's the thing that I do really like about that album – it sounds exactly like we sounded. There was no big American producer calling the shots behind the desk and telling us to do this, this and this. Grunge
Grunge (sometimes referred to as the Seattle sound) is an alternative rock genre and subculture that emerged during the in the American Pacific Northwest state of Washington, particularly in Seattle and nearby towns. Grunge fuses elements of punk rock and heavy metal, but without punk's structure and speed. The genre featured the distorted electric guitar sound used in both genres, although some bands performed with more emphasis on one or the other. Murmur (record Label)
Murmur was a record label that started as an imprint of Sony Music Australia in mid-1994. Named after R.E.M.'s first album, Murmur signed a number of Australia's most successful rock bands, including Silverchair, Ammonia, Something for Kate and Jebediah. Notable alumni of Murmur include John O'Donnell, a former ''Rolling Stone'' journalist who became the head of EMI Australia, and John Watson, who runs a music management company and independent record label Eleven. Daniel Johns
Daniel Paul Johns (born 22 April 1979) is an Australian musician, singer, and songwriter best known as the former frontman, guitarist, and main songwriter of the rock band Silverchair. Johns is also one half of The Dissociatives with Paul Mac and one half of Dreams with Luke Steele. He released his first solo album, ''Talk'', in 2015. Johns' second solo album, ''FutureNever'', was released on 22 April 2022. In 2007, Johns was ranked at number 18 on ''Rolling Stone''s list of The 25 Most Underrated Guitarists. Benjamin David Gillies (born 24 October 1979) is an Australian musician, best known as the drummer of Australian rock band Silverchair from 1992 until the band went on hiatus in 2011. In 2003, Gillies formed Tambalane with Wes Carr, initially as a songwriting project; they released a self-titled album in 2005 and toured Australia but subsequently folded. By June 2011, after Silverchair's disbandment, Gillies was in the final stages of about 12 months of working on his solo album, and he said that it was not a continuation of his earlier work with Tambalane. "Freak" is a 1997 song by Australian rock band Silverchair, released as the first single from their second album, ''Freak Show'' (1997). The song reached number one on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart, Silverchair's second single to do so after " Tomorrow" in 1994. The band would not have another number-one hit until " Straight Lines" in 2007. One of the B-sides of the single is a cover of "New Race" by Australian band Radio Birdman. The Best Of Volume 1 (Silverchair Album)
''The Best Of: Volume 1'' is the first compilation album by Australian alternative rock band Silverchair, which was issued on 13 November 2000. It includes every single they had released up until that point, with the exception of " Shade". The album peaked at No. 15 on the ARIA Albums Chart. In March 1999, after the release of ''Neon Ballroom'', Silverchair's three-album contract with Murmur and Sony Music had ended. After leaving the label, Sony issued ''The Best Of: Volume 1'' without the band's consent. Late in November 2000, Johns disavowed the compilation: "We thought about putting out ads in the street press to make people aware that we weren't endorsing it, but that would have blown the whole thing out of proportion ... If people want to buy it, they can buy it but I wouldn't buy it if I was a Silverchair fan."
