Shabe Quzi
''Night of the Hunchback'' ( fa, شب قوزی, translit=Shab-e Quzi) is a 1965 Iranian film comedy, directed and produced by Farrokh Ghaffari. The film script was based on a story from One Thousand and One Nights, but arranged for modern city life in Tehran. This was Ghaffari's third film after ''Jonub-e Shahr'' (The South of the City) and ''Arous Kodumeh?'' (Which One is Bride) which both didn't have a good grossing. Jalal Moghaddam (another intellectual film director) and George Lichensky (an Iranian-Assyrian cinematographer) encouraged Ghaffari to make this film. At first the story was set in the medieval times as in the ancient stories of One Thousand and One Nights occurred. However, the censorship office forced Ghaffari to turn the story of the film to a modern setting. Farrokh Ghaffari
Farrokh Ghaffari ( fa, فرخ غفاری, 26 February 1922 – 17 December 2006) was an Iranian film director, actor, critic and author. Along with Ebrahim Golestan and Fereydoun Rahnema he was one of the founders of Iran's New Wave film movement. By establishing the first National Iranian Film Society in 1949 at the Iran Bastan Museum and organizing the first Film Week during which English films were exhibited, Ghaffari laid the foundation for alternative and non-commercial films in Iran. Early life Ghaffari was born in Tehran, but was educated in Belgium and at the University of Grenoble in France. In 1958, Ghaffari made one of the first neorealist films in Iranian cinema, ''Jonoub-e Shahr'' (''South of the City''). Because of its depictions of working class poverty the film was banned by the Shah's government, who feared the Soviet Union would use it as a propaganda tool to show the distressed economic condition of Iran's lower classes. Hajir Darioush ( fa, هژیر داریوش , , Bandar Pahlavi, Iran – 2 October 1995, Blagnac, France) was an Iranian film maker, described by Javed Jabbar in 1982 as "the leader of the organised progressive Iranian cinema". He took his own life in Blagnac, near Toulouse, France, in 1995. Darioush studied cinema at I.D.H.E.C (Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinématographiques) later known as École Nationale Supérieure des Métiers de l'Image et du Son in Paris. After graduation, he married Goli Taraghi, a Persian novelist, and the only daughter of a rich journalist. However, the marriage did not last long. Georges Sadoul (4 February 1904 – 13 October 1967) was a French film critic, journalist and cinema writer. He is known for writing encyclopedias of film and filmmakers, many of which have been translated into English. Biography Sadoul was born in Nancy. He was trained at the Sorbonne and the IDHEC, a French cinema school. His father, Charles Sadoul, was a well-known ethnologist. At the age of 19, a student in Nancy, he collaborated with ''L'Est Républicain'' and founded the Nancy-Paris Committee. The objective of this committee is to allow the population of Nancy to meet Parisian productions and artists.
