Shabazz (album)
''Shabazz'' is a live album by drummer Billy Cobham. It was recorded in Switzerland and England during July 1974, and was released on LP in 1975 by Atlantic Records. On the album, Cobham is joined by saxophonist Michael Brecker, trumpeter Randy Brecker, trombonist Glenn Ferris, guitarist John Abercrombie (guitarist), John Abercrombie, keyboardist Milcho Leviev, and bassist Alex Blake. All of the musicians had participated in the recording of Cobham's 1974 studio album ''Total Eclipse (Billy Cobham album), Total Eclipse'', and Abercrombie and the Brecker brothers had previously appeared on ''Crosswinds (Billy Cobham album), Crosswinds'' (1974) as well. "Taurian Matador" and "Red Baron" were originally recorded on ''Spectrum (Billy Cobham album), Spectrum'' (1973). Billy Cobham
William Emanuel Cobham Jr. (born May 16, 1944) is a Panamanian Americans, Panamanian–American jazz drummer who came to prominence in the late 1960s and early 1970s with trumpeter Miles Davis and then with the Mahavishnu Orchestra. He was inducted into the ''Modern Drummer'' Hall of Fame in 1987 and the ''Classic Drummer'' Hall of Fame in 2013. AllMusic biographer Steve Huey said, "Generally acclaimed as fusion's greatest drummer, Billy Cobham's explosive technique powered some of the genre's most important early recordings – including groundbreaking efforts by Miles Davis and the Mahavishnu Orchestra – before he became an accomplished bandleader in his own right. Milcho Leviev
Milcho Leviev ( bg, Милчо Левиев ; December 19, 1937 – October 12, 2019) was a Bulgarian composer, arranger, and jazz pianist. Career Leviev was born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, and graduated from the Bulgarian State Academy of Music in 1960 majoring in composition under Pancho Vladigerov and in piano under Andrei Stoyanov. His professional development as a composer began at the Drama Theatre in Plovdiv. He was appointed conductor of the big band of Bulgarian National Radio after Emil Georgiev left office (1962–66). His ideas were innovative in the orchestra; pieces like ''Studia'', ''Blues in 9'' or ''Anti-waltz'' combined folklore and jazz. From 1963 to 1968, he worked as soloist and conductor of the Sofia and Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1965, embracing the idea of the writer Radoy Ralin, he founded Jazz Focus '65 with which he toured until 1970, achieving success for Bulgarian jazz and winning prizes at jazz festivals in Montreux, Sofia, and Prague. It catalogs more than three million album entries and 30 million tracks, as well as information on musicians and bands. ''Spectrum'' is the debut solo album by jazz fusion drummer Billy Cobham. The song "Stratus" appears in the video game ''Grand Theft Auto IV'' of the radio station "Fusion FM", as well as being the main sample in the Massive Attack hit "Safe from Harm". Recording The recording process took place at Electric Lady Studios. According to Leland Sklar it was done in just two or three days and almost every track that ended up on a record was "first or second take at the most". Ken Scott, engineer of ''Spectrum'', recounted: "Bill Cobham's drums were treated in exactly the same way as I recorded every other drummer. I just used more mics: Neumann U67s on toms, D20s or RE20s (at Electric Lady) on the bass drums, Neumann KM54 or 56 on snare, and either STC 4038s or Beyer M160 ribbon mics for the overheads. Alex Blake
Alex Blake (born Alejandro Blake Fearon Jr.) is a jazz bass player. Biography Blake was born in Panama and moved to the United States at the age of 7, growing up in Brooklyn, NY. He began his career with Sun Ra in his band Arkestra. He became one of the major proponents of the fusion movement in the late 1970s with his writing and performances with Lenny White and Billy Cobham. A live performance compilation was released by Bubble Core Records in 2000 titled '' Now Is the Time: Live at the Knitting Factory''. The album featured Blake's own quintet, which included Pharoah Sanders, Victor Jones, John Hicks and Neil Clarke (percussion). In addition to leading his own group, Blake also performs and records with Randy Weston, as well as other musicians. John Abercrombie (guitarist)
John Laird Abercrombie (December 16, 1944 – August 22, 2017) was an American jazz guitarist. His work explored jazz fusion, free jazz, and avant-garde jazz. Abercrombie studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He was known for his understated style and his work with organ trios. Career Early life and education John Abercrombie was born on December 16, 1944, in Port Chester, New York. Growing up in the 1950s in Greenwich, Connecticut he was attracted to the rock and roll of Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, and Bill Haley and the Comets. He also liked the sound of jazz guitarist Mickey Baker of the vocal duo Mickey and Silvia. He had two friends who were musicians with a large jazz collection.
