Seán Kenny (hurler)
Seán Kenny (1923 – 24 April 2002) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Borris–Ileigh and was a member of the Tipperary senior inter-county team in the 1940s and 1950s. Kenny captained Tipperary to the All-Ireland title in 1950. Early life Seán Kenny was born in Borrisoleigh, County Tipperary in 1923. He was born into a family that had a strong association with the game of hurling. His uncle, Patrick Harty, captained the Tipperary team that won the All-Ireland junior title in 1930. Kenny was educated at the local national school and later attended Thurles CBS where his own hurling skills were developed. In 1939 he captained the school to both Dean Ryan (under-17) and Dr. Harty Cup (under-19) titles. Borris–Ileigh Gaelic Athletic Club () is a Gaelic games club that is based in the village of Borrisoleigh, County Tipperary, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. The club currently plays hurling and camogie in the county-wide and North division competitions of Tipperary GAA. It formerly participated in Mid Tipperary divisional competitions. It also plays Gaelic football at Junior and under-age levels. Paddy Kenny (hurler)
Paddy Kenny (1929–2004) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Borrisoleigh and with the Tipperary senior inter-county team in the 1940s and 1950s. Kenny is regarded as one of Tipperary's greatest-ever players. Playing career Club Kenny played his club hurling with his local Borrisoleigh club and enjoyed much success. He won three senior county titles with the club in 1949, 1950 and 1953. Inter-county Kenny first came to prominence on the inter-county scene as a member of the Tipperary minor hurling team in the mid-1940s. List Of Tipperary Senior Hurling Team Captains
This article lists players who have recently captained the Tipperary county hurling team in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship and the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship. The captain is normally chosen from the club that has won the Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship. This did not happen in 1989. In that year Loughmore Castleiney were the reigning county hurling champions but did not hold the captaincy during the championship as none of their players were deemed good enough to make the team. In 1989 therefore Pat McGrath of Loughmore Castleiney was the captain during the National Hurling League and Bobby Ryan of Borris-Ileigh was the captain during the Championship. Pat Stakelum
Pat Stakelum (6 May 1927 – 4 April 2008) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Holycross–Ballycahill and was a member of the Tipperary senior inter-county team from 1947 until 1957. Stakelum captained Tipperary to the All-Ireland title in 1949. Playing career Club Pat Stakelum played his club hurling with his local Holycross–Ballycahill club and enjoyed much success. Although not regarded as one of the most successful clubs in the county he won three senior county titles in 1948 (the club's first county championship title), 1951 and 1954. Inter-county Pat Stakelum first came to prominence on the inter-county scene in the early 1940s as a member of the Tipperary minor hurling team. Railway Cup
The GAA Interprovincial Championship ( ga, An Corn Idir-Chúigeach) or Railway Cup (''Corn an Iarnróid'') is the name of two annual Gaelic football and hurling competitions held between the provinces of Ireland. The Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster GAA teams are composed of the best players from the counties in each province. The games are organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association. The Railway Cup was a revival of the Railway Shield which ran from 1905 to 1907 (football) and from 1905 to 1908 (hurling). The first Railway Cup competitions (the name is due to the donation of the trophy by Irish Rail) were held in 1927, with Munster winning the first football title and Leinster winning the first hurling title. Tim Ryan (hurler)
Timothy Ryan (1923 – 26 February 1996) was an Irish hurling, hurler. At club level he played with Borris–Ileigh GAA, Borris–Ileigh and was also a member of the Tipperary senior hurling team. Career Ryan first played hurling at club level with Borris–Ileigh GAA, Borris–Ileigh. He progressed onto the club's senior team and won a Mid Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship, Mid Tipperary SHC title in 1949, before later being a part of the club's first team to win the Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship, Tipperary SHC title. Nicky Rackard
Nicholas Rackard (28 April 1922 – 10 April 1976) was an Irish hurler whose league and championship career with the Wexford senior team spanned seventeen years from 1940 to 1957. He established many championship scoring records, including being the top championship goal-scorer of all time with 59 goals. Rackard is widely regarded as one of the greatest hurlers in the history of the game. Born in Killane, County Wexford, Rackard was introduced to sport by his father who had hoped he would become a cricketer. His uncle, John Doran, won an All-Ireland medal as a Gaelic footballer with Wexford in 1918 and it was hurling and Gaelic football that Rackard developed a talent for. Liam MacCarthy Cup
The Liam MacCarthy Cup is a trophy awarded annually by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) to the team that wins the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, the main competition in the prehistoric sport of hurling. Based on the design of a medieval drinking vessel, the trophy was first awarded in 1923 to the winners of the (delayed) 1921 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final. The original 1920s trophy was retired in the 1990s, with a new identical trophy awarded annually since 1992. The original trophy is on permanent display in the GAA Museum at Croke Park in Dublin.
