Sewickley is a Borough (Pennsylvania), borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, west northwest of Pittsburgh along the Ohio River. It is a residential suburb of Pittsburgh. The population was 3,827 according to the United States Census 2010, 2010 census. The Sewickley Bridge crosses the Ohio River from Sewickley to Moon Township. Etymology Historian Charles A. Hanna suggested "Sewickley" came from Hitchiti#Language, Creek words for "raccoon" (sawi) and "town" (ukli). According to Hanna, the Hathawekela, Asswikale branch of the Shawnee probably borrowed their name from the neighboring Muscogee#Rise of the Muscogee Confederacy, Sawokli Muscogee before the former's migration from present-day South Carolina to Pennsylvania. Contemporary accounts from noted anthropologist Frederick Webb Hodge and the Sewickley Presbyterian Church, as well as the current Sewickley Valley Historical Society concur to varying degrees with Hanna's etymology. Sewickley Academy
Sewickley Academy is a private, independent, coeducation, college-preparatory academy located in Sewickley, Pennsylvania in the United States. The Academy educates 594 students, from pre-kindergarten to twelfth grade. It is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools. History Founded in 1838 as a boys' school by William Nevin and John Champ, Sewickley Academy is the oldest independent school in western Pennsylvania. It was first located in a house owned by Squire John Way, a brick building that still stands on Beaver Road in Sewickley. Boarding students came from several southern states, including Virginia and a few from as far south as New Orleans, Louisiana, arriving by steamboat and railway to study with local day students from the Pittsburgh area. Sewickley Bridge
The Sewickley Bridge is a steel continuous truss bridge spanning the Ohio River between Sewickley and Moon Township, Pennsylvania, carrying State Route 4025 and the Orange Belt. It was built by American Bridge Company and opened on October 21, 1981. Its center span is long and the side spans are each long. The bridge deck contains two vehicle lanes and a pedestrian sidewalk. It crosses above the river. The bridge is owned by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. The current bridge is the second bridge to occupy the site; the original Sewickley Bridge opened September 19, 1911, after 26 months of construction. The bridge was a lattice-beam cantilever truss design, built by the Fort Pitt Bridge Works and officially named the Ohio River Bridge No. 1. By the late 1970s, the bridge had deteriorated badly. Sewickley Heights is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 857 at the 2020 census. Sewickley Heights is one of the wealthiest municipalities in Pennsylvania and in the United States. History Sewickley Heights was established as a borough in 1935, but the area's character was largely established with the move of the Allegheny Country Club from Pittsburgh to its Sewickley Heights location in 1902. The establishment of the country club accelerated the settlement of the area as a haven for wealthy Pittsburgh residents. Many estates established in Sewickley Heights up through the 1930s occupied hundreds of acres with houses of immense proportions. New Sewickley Township is a township in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,164 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. History New Sewickley Township is a part of depreciation lands that were set aside by Act of Assembly on March 12, 1783, to be awarded to those men who served in the American Revolutionary War. In 1801 the original Sewickley Township was divided and New Sewickley Township was created. At that time, New Sewickley Township was situated in the eastern part of Beaver County and was composed of about of hilly, but very fertile land.
