Sevan, Armenia
Sevan ( ) is a town as well as one of the most popular resorts in Armenia, located in the Sevan Municipality of the Gegharkunik Province on the northwestern shores of Lake Sevan. The town is built at a height of more than above sea level, northeast of the capital Yerevan, and north of the provincial centre Gavar. Sevan is surrounded by the Sevan National Park, a natural protected area extending from the northeastern parts of the town to the southwest, while Lake Sevan forms the natural border of the city to the east. As of the 2011 census, the population of the town was 19,229, and as per the 2016 official estimate, the population of Sevan is 19,200. As of the 2022 census, the population of the town was 18,705. Etymology Sevan was founded as Yelenovka (, ) in 1842 to become a Russian-populated village. It was named after Yelena Pavlovna the daughter of Tsar Paul I of Russia. Sevan Trout
The Sevan trout (''Salmo ishkhan'') is an endemic fish species of Lake Sevan in Armenia, known as ishkhan (իշխան, ) in Armenian. It is a salmonid fish related to the brown trout. The fish is endangered, because various competitors were introduced into the lake during the Soviet period, including common whitefish (''Coregonus lavaretus'') from Lake Ladoga, goldfish (''Carassius auratus'') and narrow-clawed crayfish (''Astacus leptodactylus''); and because of lake level change. On the other hand, the Sevan trout itself has been successfully introduced to Issyk Kul lake in Kyrgyzstan. A resolution by Armenia's Council of Ministers in 1976 stopped the commercial fishing of Sevan trout and organized Sevan National Park. The fish are nowadays also reared in hatcheries. Sevan Football Club (), formerly Junior Sevan Football Club, was a football club based in Sevan, Armenia. It was the most recent football club that represented the Gegharkunik Province of Armenia in professional football. History Sevan Football Club was founded in 2018 as ''Junior Sevan Football Club'', in the town of Sevan. In its first year of foundation, Junior Sevan applied and took part in the Armenian First League. Sevan Mardig Malikyan (; born 4 September 1972) is a British expressive artist of Armenian ancestry. Career Malikyan was born in 1972 in St Pancras, London. Sevan's father, Kevork Malikyan (born 1943) is an Anglo-Armenian actor from Diyarbakır, Turkey who had moved to the UK in 1963 to study at Rose Bruford Drama School. Malikyan's mother Maida (born in 1947), from Nicosia, Cyprus, arrived in the UK in 1959 and worked as a hair stylist in London where they met. A studio based painter, Malikyan is considered one of the young outstanding artists of his generation with many exhibitions. Sevan got his Art education in London, he gained a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from the Bath School of Art and Design. Sevan Nişanyan (; born 21 December 1956) is a Turkish-Armenian writer, fugitive and lexicographer. Author of a number of books, Nişanyan was awarded the Ayşe Nur Zarakolu Liberty Award of the Turkish Human Rights Association in 2004 for his contributions to greater freedom of speech. He is also known for his work to restore Şirince, a semi-derelict village near Turkey's Aegean coast. Sevan Nişanyan was given a cumulative prison sentence of 16 years and 7 months for building infractions, and for allegedy insulting the Islamic prophet Muhammad in a blog entry in September 2012. He escaped from the prison in July 2017 and moved to Athens, where he intended to apply for political asylum, as stated in his interview to the Belgian daily ''La Libre Belgique''. Lake Sevan
Lake Sevan () is the largest body of water in both Armenia and the Caucasus region. It is one of the largest freshwater Alpine lake, high-altitude (alpine) lakes in Eurasia. The lake is situated in Gegharkunik Province, at an altitude of above sea level. The total surface area of its basin is about , which makes up of Armenia's territory. The lake itself is , and the volume is . It is fed by 28 rivers and streams. Only 10% of the incoming water is drained by the Hrazdan River, while the remaining 90% evaporates. Sevan has significant economic, cultural, and recreational value. Its sole major island (now a peninsula) is home to a Sevanavank, medieval monastery. The lake provides some 90% of the fish and 80% of the crayfish catch of Armenia. Sevan Ross
Sevan Ross (born 1951) is a Zen Buddhist priest and teacher with training backgrounds in both the Sōtō and Rinzai traditions in the Harada-Yasutani lineage. He is the former abbot and spiritual director of the Chicago Zen Center in Evanston, IL. Ross was sanctioned as a Zen teacher by Bodhin Kjolhede, who was dharma successor of Philip Kapleau. Ross additionally trained with Toni Packer and James Ford in the lineage of Robert Aitkin. In 2007, he was given dharma transmission by Ford Roshi, who himself holds dharma transmission in both the Aitkin lineage and Jiyu Kennett (Sōtō) lineage. Ross is an advocate of vegetarianism.
