The Sethupathis are a Tamil clan of the Maravar community native to the Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu, India. They were from the 17th century considered independent kings who ruled the Ramnad kingdom, also known as ''Maravar country''. The male rulers of Ramnathapuram also bore the title of "Sethupathi" or "protector of the bridge", which was first granted to the first Sethupathi Raghunatha Kilavan by the Thanjavur Nayaks, the bridge here referring to the legendary sacred Rama's Bridge (Adam's Bridge), while female rulers bore the title "Nachiyar". Among the seventy two poligars (feudal title of chieftains under Nayaka rulers) of the region, the Sethupathi stood first. Muthuramalinga Sethupathi II (1841–1873) was the ''zamindar'' of Ramnad estate from 1862 to 1873. He was adopted by his aunt Parvatha Vardhani Ammal Nachiyar, the Rani of Ramnad. Raja Rajeswara Sethupathi ( ta, ராஜ ராஜேஸ்வர சேதுபதி) or Muthuramalinga Sethupathy (3 June 1889 – 1929) was the Raja of Ramnad from 1903 to 1929. Early life and education Raja Rajeswara Sethupathi was the son of Bhaskara Sethupathy and the father of politician Shanmugha Rajeswara Sethupathi, former MP Kasinatha Durai R, Chidhambaranadha Durai & Vijayaraghunadha Durai. Vijayaraghunatha Sethupathi (died 1720) ruled from 1710 to 1720 the ''"Ramnad Kingdom"'', also known as ''"Maravar Kingdom"''. Bhaskara Sethupathi
Bhaskara Sethupathy ( Muthuvijaya Raghunatha Bhaskara; 3 November 1868 – 27 December 1903) was a Zamindar of Ramnad. He became the recognised proprietor of the Ramnad estate after his father's death in 1873 until 1895. From 1895, he assumed Managership of Rameswaram until 1901. He was regarded as a pious, brilliant and generous ruler by his supporters. His supporters believed that he would regain control of Ramnad estate some day. He died suddenly at the age of 35 in 1903.
