Seth Chandler
Seth Carlo Chandler, Jr. (September 16, 1846 – December 31, 1913) was an American astronomer, geodesist, and actuary. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Seth Carlo and Mary (née Cheever) Chandler. During his last year in high school he performed mathematical computations for Benjamin Peirce, of the Harvard College Observatory. After graduating, he became the assistant of Benjamin A. Gould. Gould was director of the Longitude Department of the U.S. Coast Survey program, a geodetic survey program. When Gould left to become director of the national observatory in Argentina, Chandler also left and became an actuary. However, he continued to work in astronomy as an amateur affiliated with Harvard College Observatory. Chandler is best remembered for his research on what is today known as the Chandler wobble. A variable star is a star whose brightness as seen from Earth (its apparent magnitude) changes with time. Merri Sue Carter
Merri Sue Carter (born 1964) is an American astronomer who works at the United States Naval Observatory as director of the World Data Center for the Rotation of the Earth, Washington. She is also the author of books on the history of astronomy with her father, geodesist William E. Carter. Education and career Carter was born on November 16, 1964, in Columbus, Ohio, where her father, William E. Carter, was studying geodesy at Ohio State University. He became a research geodesist for the United States Air Force, the University of Hawaii, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the family moved frequently as Carter was growing up. She graduated from University of Maryland, College Park in 1986, and earned a master's degree in 1999 through University of Maryland University College. Chandler (crater)
Chandler is a Lunar craters, lunar impact crater in the northern hemisphere, on the Moon's Far side (Moon), far side. It lies to the southeast of the large walled plain D'Alembert (crater), D'Alembert, and southeast of the slightly smaller Chernyshev (crater), Chernyshev crater. This is a heavily worn and eroded crater that is now essentially a wide, irregular depression in the rugged lunar surface. Attached to the outer south-southwest rim is the slightly smaller but equally worn Chandler P. Multiple small craters lie along the rim and inner wall of Chandler, but the northern part of the rim has been nearly obliterated by a cluster of small impacts. A comet is an icy, small Solar System body that, when passing close to the Sun, warms and begins to release gases, a process that is called outgassing. This produces a visible atmosphere or coma, and sometimes also a tail. These phenomena are due to the effects of solar radiation and the solar wind acting upon the nucleus of the comet. Comet nuclei range from a few hundred meters to tens of kilometers across and are composed of loose collections of ice, dust, and small rocky particles. An asteroid is a minor planet of the inner Solar System. Sizes and shapes of asteroids vary significantly, ranging from 1-meter rocks to a dwarf planet almost 1000 km in diameter; they are rocky, metallic or icy bodies with no atmosphere.
