Sesemat (exclosure)
Sesemat is an exclosure located in the Dogu'a Tembien ''woreda'' of the Tigray Region in Ethiopia. The area has been protected since 1993 by the local community. Timeline * 1993: established as exclosure by the community * 2017: support by the EthioTrees project Environmental characteristics * Area: 46 ha * Average slope gradient: 24% * Aspect: the exclosure is oriented towards the northeast * Minimum altitude: 1943 metres * Maximum altitude: 2055 metres * Lithology: Antalo Limestone Management As a general rule, cattle ranging and wood harvesting are not allowed. The grasses are harvested once yearly and taken to the homesteads of the village to feed livestock. There are two guards to protect the exclosure. Addi Azmera
Addi Azmera is a ''tabia'' or municipality in the Dogu'a Tembien district of the Tigray Region of Ethiopia. The name refers to good spring rains (“azmera”), in relation to the local microclimate. The ''tabia'' centre is in Tukhul town, located approximately half-way between the ''woreda'' town Hagere Selam and the regional capital Mekelle. Geography The ''tabia'' stretches on both sides of the main road that climbs towards Dogu’a Tembien after passing the bridge on Giba River. The highest location are the upper slopes of Imba Dogu’a (2590 m a.s.l.) and the lowest place along Giba River (1750 m a.s.l.). It comprises cultivated plains and steeper slopes, with often good vegetation (re)growth. Spotted Hyena
The spotted hyena (''Crocuta crocuta''), also known as the laughing hyena, is a hyena species, currently classed as the sole extant member of the genus ''Crocuta'', native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is listed as being of least concern by the IUCN on account of its widespread range and large numbers estimated between 27,000 and 47,000 individuals. The species is, however, experiencing declines outside of protected areas due to habitat loss and poaching. The species may have originated in Asia, and once ranged throughout Europe for at least one million years until the end of the Late Pleistocene. Montane White-eye
Heuglin's white-eye (''Zosterops poliogastrus''), also known as the Ethiopian white-eye (formerly the montane white-eye), is a species of bird in the family Zosteropidae. It is found in north-eastern and eastern Africa, primarily in Ethiopia and Kenya. Its natural habitats range from subtropical or tropical moist montane forests, to subtropical or tropical high-altitude shrubland, plantations, and rural gardens. The Mbulu white-eye, the south Pare white-eye and the broad-ringed white-eye were formerly considered as subspecies of Heuglin's white-eye. They were promoted to species rank based on a molecular phylogenetic study published in 2014. To reflect this change, the English name was changed from "montane white-eye" to "Heuglin's white-eye". African Paradise Flycatcher
The African paradise flycatcher (''Terpsiphone viridis'') is a medium-sized passerine bird. The two central tail feathers of the male are extended into streamers that commonly are more than twice as long as the body. The female tail feathers are of moderate length and without streamers. The upper parts of the male body, wings, and tail are boldly coloured in chestnut or rusty shades, but the underparts and the head are variably grey to blue-gray, with the head of the mature male being darker, commonly glossy black with greenish highlights. The beak and other bare areas, including a wattle ring round the eye, match the colour of the surrounding feathers. Abyssinian Woodpecker
The Abyssinian woodpecker (''Dendropicos abyssinicus''), also known as the golden-backed woodpecker or the golden-mantled woodpecker, is a species of bird in the woodpecker family, Picidae. It is native to Africa, where it occurs in Eritrea and Ethiopia. It appears to be a close relative of the cardinal woodpecker ''Dendropicos fuscescens''. Description The Abyssinian woodpecker is a very small woodpecker with a relatively long and broad bill. Black-billed Barbet
The black-billed barbet (''Lybius guifsobalito'') is a species of bird in the Lybiidae family. Distribution This species has an extremely large range in the Afrotropical realm. It is present in Cameroon, northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea, from eastern Sudan to western Ethiopia, western Kenya, northern Tanzania, and Uganda. Black-winged Lovebird
The black-winged lovebird (''Agapornis taranta'') also known as Abyssinian lovebird is a mainly green bird of the parrot family.
