Serra is an Italian village and ''frazione'' of the Commune of Rocca Santa Maria in the Province of Teramo, Abruzzo, Italy. The village sits at an elevation of 3596 feet above sea level in the area of Monti della Laga within the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park. History Overview The village likely takes its name from the word ''sèrrə'' which in the local dialect means crest. The location of Serra is in fact on a high elevation overlooking the Vezzola river. In previous times the village belonged to the ''Università'' (a medieval term typically referring to several small clusters of dwellings) of the village of Rocca Bisegna. Others areas sharing this distinction included Faiete-Cona Faiete, San Biagio, Pomarolo and Macchia Santa Cecilia. In a book published in 1804 by Luigi Ercole the village is listed as having 38 inhabitants. By 1841 this figure had swelled to 44. In 2007 Serra had but one sole remaining citizen. Monti della Laga is a mountain range in the central Apennines of Italy. Their ruggedness and inaccessibility makes them one of the lesser known areas of the Italian peninsula. Geography The mountains run for a length of about between the Italian Regions of Abruzzo, Marche and Lazio. In doing so they border the Italian Provinces of Teramo, L'Aquila, Ascoli Piceno and Rieti. The Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park is a natural park located mostly in Abruzzo, Italy. Martese
Martese is a "frazione" (hamlet) in the commune of Rocca Santa Maria in the Province of Teramo, Italy. Geography The village sits at an elevation of approximately above sea level. The distance by car to Rocca Santa Maria is less than one mile. The infrequently used road between these two towns is steep and rather primitive. It can be found just off the provincial highway (SP 48) that leads from Teramo to Ceppo via Rocca Santa Maria and Bosco Martese. The old town center is composed of a small cluster of houses. As was the custom of the day a small church sits nearby and off to itself. Tavolero
Tavolero, (also referred to as Tavolier, Tivolieri, or in ancient Roman times as ''Tebularium'') is a "frazione" (i.e., suburb) of the Communal town of Rocca Santa Maria in the Province of Teramo. It is located in the area known as Monti della Laga and sits within the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park. The village can be found at an elevation about 2709 feet on a rocky piece of land that juts out over and dominates the nearby Tordino River. In the year 2007 Tavolero is but an uninhabited ghosttown. Most of the villas in the village date back to the 18th century. One in particular is of major historical significance and was likely constructed in the 15th century. On 1 January 2011 the bank purchased fellow savings bank Banca Caripe from Banco Popolare. The enlarged banking group was also referred as Tercas Caripe.
