Sermoneta
Sermoneta is a hill town and ''comune'' in the province of Latina (Lazio), central Italy. It is a walled hill town, with a 13th-century Romanesque cathedral called Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and a massive castle, built by the Caetani family. The Cistercian Valvisciolo Abbey is located nearby. The churches of San Giuseppe (mainly 16th century) and San Michele (mainly 12th century) still stand. In the 13th-16th centuries, it was home to a flourishing Jewish community. Sermoneta is the hometown of the humanist Aldo Manuzio and eighteenth-century painter Antonio Cavallucci. Scenes of the 2007 film ''Silk'' featuring Keira Knightley were filmed in Sermoneta. The 2015 short film ''Italian Miracle'' was filmed in the town. Caetani
The House of Caetani, or Gaetani, is the name of an Italian noble family, originally from the city of Gaeta, connected by some to the lineage of the lords of the Duchy of Gaeta, as well as to the patrician Gaetani of the Republic of Pisa. It played an important role in Rome, in the Papal States and in the Kingdom of Naples, and later in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Origins The Caetani, or Gaetani family, according to a family tradition, was descendant of the Dukes of Gaeta. Santa Maria Assunta, Sermoneta
The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta ( it, Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta, Sermoneta) is a Gothic church located in Sermoneta, southern Lazio, Italy. The church is often referred to as a cathedral ("cattedrale") but has never been the seat of a bishop. It is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. History The church is documented for the first time in the 12th century (1149–60). A palaeo-Christian church was possibly first built in the 5th century over a temple dedicated to the pagan goddess Cybele. The Romanesque church was refurbished in the next century in a Gothic style. Description The church has a tall square bell-tower with rounded arches. The Gothic portico leads to a nave supported by marble columns. San Giuseppe is a Renaissance-style, deconsecrated Roman Catholic church located in the center of Sermoneta, region of Lazio, Italy. History and Description The façade was erected after 1520, and construction continued until 1733. The apse shows traces of the Romanesque architecture of the original church. Antonio Cavallucci
Antonio Cavallucci (21 August 1752 – 18 November 1795) was an eighteenth-century Italian painter of religious scenes and portraits. Biography Cavallucci was born in Sermoneta in the Lazio. His artistic talents were recognized in an early stage by Francesco Caetani, Duke of Sermoneta in 1738-1810. Valvisciolo Abbey
Valvisciolo Abbey is a Cistercian monastery in the province of Latina, central Italy, near the towns of Sermoneta and Ninfa. It is an example of rigorous Romanesque-Cistercian architecture, considered a masterpiece of that style in central Italy second only to the nearby Fossanova Abbey. History According to tradition, the abbey was founded in the 8th century by Greek Basilian monks. Some sources state that it was established in 1145 by the monks of Cistercian order, by monks from the Abbey of Fossanova. Ubaldo Righetti (; born 1 March 1963) is an Italian former professional footballer who played as a defender; he was usually deployed as a centre-back. Club career Righetti played 10 seasons in the Italian Serie A for A.S. Roma, Udinese, U.S. Lecce, Bari, and Delfino Pescara 1936. Fabritio Caroso da Sermoneta (1526/1535 – 1605/1620) was an Italian Renaissance dancing master and a composer or transcriber of dance music. His dance manual ''Il Ballarino'' was published in 1581, with a subsequent edition, significantly different, ''Nobiltà di Dame'', printed in 1600 and again after his death in 1630.
