''Seriously Deep'' is an album by of compositions by David Axelrod. Original liner notes Only a week after this album was finished, David and I sat down and played a dub of “Seriously Deep” for a college student. She was a young girl who was certainly not aware of his work (or the success of it) in the past few years. After nearly 40 minutes of intense listening, the album ended, and, as if language were no longer permitted, everything became very quiet. David finally said, “Well?” The girl looked across the coffee table, “It’s a pleasure to know you.” Quite a few people have shared the sentiment of that college student. David Axelrod (musician)
David Axelrod (April 17, 1931 – February 5, 2017) was an American composer, arranger, and producer. After starting out as a staff producer for record companies specializing in jazz, Axelrod became known by the mid-1960s in soul and jazz circles for his recording skills. In 1968, Axelrod embarked on a solo career and released several albums during the 1970s that showcased his characteristic sound, which combined heavily microphoned drums and baroque orchestration, and avant garde themes ranging from the environment to heightened mental awareness. With his early solo projects, Axelrod was one of the first recording artists to fuse elements of jazz, rock, and R&B. Jay Migliori (November 14, 1930 – September 2, 2001) was an American saxophonist, best known as a founding member of Supersax, a tribute band to Charlie Parker. Biography Migliori started playing the saxophone after he received one as a birthday present at the age of twelve. He attended a music school in St. Louis, and after serving in the Air Force, went to the Berklee College of Music. He made his first recording in 1955, and soon joined up with Woody Herman's band. After leaving the band, he would then move to Los Angeles, where he became a session musician playing on an estimated 4,000 commercial recordings. Some artists he recorded with include the Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, Frank Zappa, Onzy Matthews, Maynard Ferguson, and many more. Nathan Gershman, born Nathan Gerschman (November 29, 1917, Philadelphia – September 13, 2008, North Hollywood) was an American cellist and session musician who played in popular music, jazz, and classical idioms. Gershman was the brother of violinist Paul Gershman, and received classical training at the Curtis Institute of Music, graduating in 1940. From 1940 to 1947 he played with the Cleveland Orchestra, then moved to New York City to work as a studio musician, working in the same capacity in Los Angeles after 1954. In 1957 he replaced Fred Katz as cellist in Chico Hamilton's band, playing with Hamilton until 1961. As a jazz musician, he also worked in the 1970s with Nat Adderley, Gábor Szabó, and Ronnie Laws. Leon "Ndugu" Chancler ( ; July 1, 1952 – February 3, 2018) was an American pop, funk, and jazz drummer. He was also a composer, producer, and university professor. Biography Early life Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, on July 1, 1952, Leon Chancler was the youngest of seven children from the union of Rosie Lee and Henry Nathaniel Chancler. In 1960, the family relocated to Los Angeles, California. Chancler began playing drums when he was thirteen years old. He would publicly reminisce about being asked to leave a classroom for continuously tapping on the desk, only to be later heard tapping on the poles in the hallway. James David Hughart (born July 28, 1936) is a jazz and pop bass player. Biography Hughart was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States, and is the son of Frederick (Fritz) Hughart, bassist with Minneapolis Symphony and San Diego Symphony, and Annette Hughart (née Bastien). Hughart began working as a musician in 1953. In 1957 he received a BA (Music Composition & Theory, Bass) from the University of Minnesota. Following graduation, Hughart was drafted and for two years, traveled throughout Europe performing with the Seventh Army Symphony Orchestra. After his discharge from the Army, he joined Ella Fitzgerald's touring band following a recommendation from Ray Brown.
