Sergio Sánchez (runner)
Sergio Sánchez (born 1 October 1982 in La Pola de Gordón) is a Spanish long-distance runner who specializes in the 5000 metres. He finished sixteenth at the 1999 World Youth Championships and eighth at the 2008 World Indoor Championships, both in the 3000 metres. He also won a bronze medal at the European Athletics Indoor Cup that year. At the 2009 World Championships in Athletics he ran in the 5000 m but did not progress beyond the heats stage. A fourth-place finish at the 2009 European Cross Country Championships earned him a team gold medal alongside the Spanish men. The 2000 metres or 2000-metre run is a track running event where five laps are completed around an outdoor 400 m track, or ten laps around a 200 m indoor track - the distance is 11.68 meters short of 1¼ miles. The 1500 metres or 1,500-metre run (typically pronounced 'fifteen-hundred metres') is the foremost middle distance track event in athletics. The distance has been contested at the Summer Olympics since 1896 and the World Championships in Athletics since 1983. It is equivalent to 1.5 kilometers or approximately miles. The event is closely associated with its slightly longer cousin, the mile race, from which it derives its nickname "the metric mile". The demands of the race are similar to that of the 800 metres, but with a slightly higher emphasis on aerobic endurance and a slightly lower sprint speed requirement. The European 10,000m Cup is an annual 10,000 metres race for European athletes which was first held in 1997. The competition is organised by the European Athletics Association and first began as the European 10000 Metres Challenge (''European 10,000m Challenge'' till 2005 edition), after the event was removed from the European Cup programme. The 2010 European Athletics Championships were the 20th edition of the European Athletics Championships, organised under the supervision of the European Athletic Association.
