Percy Main
Percy Main is a small village absorbed into North Shields, North East England. Historically in Northumberland, it is now part of Tyne and Wear. History It is named after the colliery belonging to the Percy family, which was located just south of the railway, near St. John's church. The colliery was sunk in 1799 & went to a depth of 247 metres to the renowned Main seam, which was considered the best coal for household use. The village grew up around it to serve the pit, which eventually closed in 1895. In 1872, the population was recorded as 3,953, residing in 786 houses. The inhabitants worked mainly in the neighbouring docks and other industries. During World War II, children from the village were evacuated to Hexham, Northumberland. John Rutherford (footballer)
John James Rutherford (4 March 1907 – 1983) was an English footballer. Career Rutherford began his career at amateur club Ilford, scoring a hat-trick as a teenager in a 3–1 away win against Ajax, before having brief spells at West Ham United and Arsenal. Jock Rutherford
John "Jock" Rutherford (12 October 1884 – 21 April 1963) was an English footballer who played in the Football League for Arsenal, Clapton Orient and Newcastle United. He played 11 times for England, and had a short and unsuccessful spell as manager of Stoke. Club career Born in Percy Main, North Shields, Northumberland, Rutherford was known for his longevity; he played nearly six hundred Football League and FA Cup matches, despite four seasons of football being cancelled due to World War I. He started his career at Newcastle United, making his debut in 1902 against West Bromwich Albion, scoring twice. Nicknamed "the Newcastle flyer", he spent ten seasons at the "Magpies", as an outside right renowned for his pace and close control. The Football League
The English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888 as the Football League, the league is the oldest such competition in the world. It was the top-level football league in England from its foundation until 1992, when the top 22 clubs split from it to form the Premier League.
