The following events occurred in September 1961: September 1, 1961 (Friday) *The Soviet Union 1961 Soviet nuclear tests, resumed nuclear testing after a moratorium (law), moratorium of three years. Neither the U.S. nor the U.S.S.R. had exploded a nuclear bomb since 1958. The Soviets exploded 45 bombs over 65 days. *The Eritrean War of Independence began. The first shot was fired by an Eritrean Liberation Front member Hamid Idris Awate, leader of a group of 11 fighters, against Ethiopian government forces at the Barka district. Awate would be killed in 1962, but the ELF would continue to gather members. *TWA Flight 529 crashed at 2:05 am local time shortly after taking off from Chicago's Midway Airport. The Constellation airplane impacted in a cornfield near Hinsdale, Illinois, killing all 78 people on board. At the time, it was the worst single plane disaster in American history. The Deutsche Bundespost (German federal post office) was a German state-run postal service and telecommunications business founded in 1947. It was initially the second largest federal employer during its time. After staff reductions in the 1980s, the staff was reduced to roughly 543,200 employees in 1985. Quonset Point (), also known simply as Quonset, is a small peninsula in Narragansett Bay in the town of North Kingstown, Rhode Island. Its name is widely known from the Quonset hut, which was first manufactured there. ''Quonset'' is an Algonquian word meaning "small, long place". Quonset Point was the location of Naval Air Station Quonset Point, a large United States Navy base. The peninsula is now used for industrial purposes and is partially abandoned. Mount Pulai ( ms, Gunung Pulai) is a mountain located in the district of Kulai, Johor, Malaysia. History World War II During the World War II, Mount Pulai served as the British Commonwealth armies stronghold against the invading Japanese Imperial Army. The Skudai River ( ms, Sungai Skudai) is located in Johor, Malaysia. Its main tributary originated from a small creek within an oil palm plantation in Kg. Sedenak, Kulai, then flowing south-ward towards the Johor Bahru city. Its river mouth is located in Danga Bay, Tampoi discharging its water to the narrow Tebrau Straits. Water Conflicts Between Malaysia And Singapore
Both Singapore and Malaysia have a conflict over water supplies ever since Singapore was separated from Malaysia in 1965. To ensure sufficient water supply in the rapidly modernising colonial city of Singapore during the 1900s. In 1910, the municipal leadership of Singapore and Sultan Ibrahim of the state and territories of Johor in neighbouring Malaya signed an agreement that allowed Singapore to rent land in Johor and use its water for free.
