Allouez Township ( ) is a civil township of Keweenaw County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,428 at the 2020 census. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Allouez Township has a total area of , of which is land and (0.13%) is water. The township is in western Keweenaw County, on the northwest side of the Keweenaw Peninsula. It is bordered to the south by Calumet Charter Township in Houghton County, to the southeast by Sherman Township and to the east by Houghton Township in Keweenaw County, and to the northwest by Lake Superior. The Black Creek Nature Sanctuary is also located within the township. Eagle River, Michigan
Eagle River is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is the county seat of Keweenaw County. Its population was 65 at the 2020 census, which makes it by far the least-populated county seat in the state of Michigan. As an unincorporated community, Eagle River has no legal autonomy and is part of Allouez Township and Houghton Township. History Eagle River was a boom town of the copper mining era in the Keweenaw. Copper was discovered in 1845 at the Cliff Range nearby, the so-called "Cliff Lode". The land of the Eagle River community had been leased by the Keweenaw Copper Company in 1843. Conglomerate () is a clastic sedimentary rock that is composed of a substantial fraction of rounded to subangular gravel-size clasts. A conglomerate typically contains a matrix of finer-grained sediments, such as sand, silt, or clay, which fills the interstices between the clasts. M-26 (Michigan Highway)
M-26 is a state trunkline highway in the U.S. state of Michigan, running from east of Rockland to its junction with US Highway 41 (US 41) in Copper Harbor. It generally runs southwest-to-northeast in the western half or Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The northernmost segment, which closely parallels the shore of Lake Superior on the west side of the Keweenaw Peninsula, is highly scenic. M-26 previously reached the Wisconsin border, but a section of the highway became US 45. Black Creek Nature Sanctuary
Black Creek Nature Sanctuary, commonly referred to as Black Creek, is a nature sanctuary located in Keweenaw County, Michigan. It is maintained and preserved by the non-profit organization Michigan Nature Association, and is only one of many parks and sanctuaries maintained by the association in Keweenaw County. The Black Creek Nature Sanctuary provides varied landscapes, several beaver ponds, sand dunes fringed by giant white birch, mixed conifers, lowland hardwoods, and of Lake Superior shoreline. Starting in 1991, local citizens began purchasing land for preservation, and by 1992, a total of were acquired. In 2006, the land along the lake's shoreline was added for the present size of . Access to the sanctuary is by a hiking trail of more than two miles (3 km) in length, and traverses a variety of environments.
