Alexander Alderman Semmes
Alexander Alderman Semmes (January 18, 1825 – September 22, 1885) was a career United States Navy officer, who served with distinction in the American Civil War. He was a cousin of Confederate naval hero Raphael Semmes, and also of Confederate general Paul Jones Semmes. Early life Alexander Alderman Semmes was born in Washington, D.C., on January 18, 1825. Naval career Semmes became a midshipman on October 27, 1841. He attended the United States Naval Academy and became a passed midshipman on August 10, 1847. He was promoted to master on September 14, 1855, and to lieutenant the next day, September 15, 1855. He became a lieutenant commander on July 16, 1862, and commander on July 25, 1866. He attained the rank of captain on August 24, 1873, and was promoted to commodore on March 10, 1882. Benedict Joseph Semmes (November 1, 1789 – February 10, 1863) was an American politician. Born in Charles County, Maryland, Semmes attended the rural schools and a medical college in Philadelphia. He graduated from Baltimore Medical School in 1811 and commenced practice in Prince George's County, Maryland. He later engaged in farming. Semmes served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 1825 to 1828 and served as speaker. He served in the Maryland State Senate, and was elected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-first and Twenty-second Congresses, serving from March 4, 1829, to March 3, 1833. Paul Jones Semmes
Paul Jones Semmes (June 4, 1815 – July 10, 1863) was a banker, businessman, and a Confederate brigadier general in the American Civil War, mortally wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg. Early life Semmes was born at Montford's Plantation in Wilkes County, Georgia. He was a cousin of future Confederate naval hero, ''CSS Alabama'' Captain Raphael Semmes. His half-brother, Albert Gallatin Semmes, later became an associate justice of the Florida Supreme Court. Paul Semmes was educated at the Beman School in Hancock County. He attended the University of Virginia and became a banker and planter in Wilkes County, Georgia. He was elected commander of the Georgia Militia 1st Brigade of the 4th Division in 1837 and held that commission until 1840 when he moved to Columbus, Georgia. His business endeavors flourished and he became one of Columbus's most prominent citizens. From 1846 to 1861, he served as a captain in the Georgia militia. Raphael Semmes ( ; September 27, 1809 – August 30, 1877) was an officer in the Confederate Navy during the American Civil War. Until then, he had been a serving officer in the US Navy from 1826 to 1860. During the American Civil War, Semmes was captain of the cruiser , the most successful commerce raider in maritime history, taking 65 prizes. Late in the war, he was promoted to rear admiral and also acted briefly as a brigadier general in the Confederate States Army. His appointment or arrangement to act as a temporary brigadier general from April 5 to April 26, 1865, was never submitted to or officially confirmed by the Confederate Senate. Stephen William Semmes (born 26 May 1962) is the Noah Harding Professor of Mathematics at Rice University. He is known for contributions to analysis on metric spaces, as well as harmonic analysis, complex variables, partial differential equations, and differential geometry. He received his B.S. at the age of 18, a Ph.D. at 21 from Washington University in St. Louis and became a full professor at Rice at 25. Clarence Thomas (born June 23, 1948) is an American jurist who serves as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. He was nominated by President George H. W. Bush to succeed Thurgood Marshall and has served since 1991. After Marshall, Thomas is the second African American to serve on the Court and its longest-serving member since Anthony Kennedy's retirement in 2018. Thomas was born in Pin Point, Georgia.
