Semen Stepanovych Hulak-Artemovsky ( uk, Семен Степанович Гулак-Артемовський, also referred to as Semyon Gulak-Artemovsky and Artemovs’kyj) ( – ), was a Ukrainians, Ukrainian opera composer, singer (baritone), actor, and dramatist who lived and worked in Imperial Russia. He is known mainly for his comic opera ''Zaporozhets za Dunayem'' (''A Zaporozhian Host, Zaporozhian (Cossack) Beyond the Danube''), as well as for his dramatic talent and his powerful, rich baritone voice. He was the nephew of the poet Petro Hulak-Artemovsky and a close friend of Taras Shevchenko. Biography Hulak-Artemovsky was born in Horodyshche, Kiev Governorate (today in independent Ukraine) to the family of a priest, and went on to study at the Kiev Theological Seminary from 1835 to 1838. Domenico Gaetano Maria Donizetti (29 November 1797 – 8 April 1848) was an Italian composer, best known for his almost 70 operas. Along with Gioachino Rossini and Vincenzo Bellini, he was a leading composer of the '' bel canto'' opera style during the first half of the nineteenth century and a probable influence on other composers such as Giuseppe Verdi. Donizetti was born in Bergamo in Lombardy. At an early age he was taken up by Simon Mayr who enrolled him with a full scholarship in a school which he had set up. ''Fomka the Fool'' '' (Fomka-durachok: russian: Фомка-дурачок)'' is a one-act opera by Anton Rubinstein to a libretto by M. L. Mikhaylov. It was given its only performance in 1853. Background ''Fomka'' was the second of Rubinstein's operas to be performed. It was commissioned, together with two other one-act operas, '' The Siberian Hunters'' and ''Vengeance'', by the Grand Duchess Yelena Pavlovna. ''Dmitry Donskoy'' ''(russian: Дмитрий Донской''), also known as ''The Battle of Kulikovo (russian: Куликовская битва)'' was the first opera written by Anton Rubinstein. It has three acts and a libretto by Count Vladimir Sollogub and Vladimir Zotov, based on a drama by Vladislav Ozerov. First performed in 1852, the opera, apart from its overture, is now lost. Background Rubinstein asked for a libretto from Sollogub, who had also worked on Glinka's successful opera '' A Life for the Tsar'', on what was ostensibly also a nationalist theme, the success of Dmitry Donskoy at the Battle of Kulikovo (1380) against the commander of the Tatar Golden Horde, Mamai.
