Selkirk RFC
Selkirk Rugby Football Club are a rugby union side based in Selkirk in the Borders, Scotland. They play in their home games at Philiphaugh, and compete in the Scottish Premiership (the highest tier of club rugby) and the Border League (the oldest established rugby union league in the world). The club was officially instituted in 1907, but the game of rugby was played in the Royal and Ancient Burgh of Selkirk long before this date. In 1877 a game described as the first to be played under rules took place at Philiphaugh. Indeed, Selkirk sent a team to the inaugural Melrose Sevens tournament back in 1883, and have been trying to win the Tournament ever since. The club has produced twelve Scotland internationalists and several British Lions, including John Rutherford, and Ian Paxton, a very respectable amount when the size of the royal burgh is taken into consideration. Scottish Rugby Union
The Scottish Rugby Union (SRU; gd, Aonadh Rugbaidh na h-Alba) is the governing body of rugby union in Scotland. Styled as Scottish Rugby, it is the second oldest Rugby Union, having been founded in 1873. Kelso Sevens
Kelso Sevens is an annual rugby sevens event held by Kelso RFC, in Kelso, Scotland. This was one of a group of Sevens tournaments instated after the First World War extending the original Borders Spring Circuit. The Kelso Sevens began in 1920. The Kelso Sevens is part of the Kings of the Sevens championship run by the Border League. 2019's Kelso Sevens will be played on 4 May 2019. Iain Paxton
Iain Angus McLeod Paxton (born 29 December 1957) is a Scottish former rugby union player. He won 36 caps for Scotland at number eight and lock between 1981 and 1988, scoring a total of five tries.Bath, p153 He also won four caps for the British Lions against New Zealand in 1983. Playing career Selkirk Paxton's old playing club was Selkirk. Scotland Paxton made his Scotland debut against New Zealand All Blacks on the 1981 tour and later that year he helped Scotland to a memorable 24-15 win over Australia at Murrayfield. He was also a key figure in Scotland’s 1984 Grand Slam winning side, playing in all matches, relegating John Beattie to the bench. When he finished his career in 1988, Paxton was Scotland's most capped No. 8 with 36 caps. Jock King (10 April 1925 – 8 September 1982) is a former Scotland international rugby union player. King played as a Hooker. Rugby union career Amateur career King played for Selkirk. Stan Cowan (22 December 1931 – 8 February 2015) was a Scottish rugby union and professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1950s and 1960s. Alexander MacKenzie (rugby Union)
James Gregor Mackenzie (15 November 1927 – 4 May 1992) was a British Labour Party politician. Early life Mackenzie was educated at the Royal Technical College and the University of Glasgow. He became a sales manager and a councillor on Glasgow Corporation from 1952. Political career Mackenzie contested Aberdeenshire East in 1950 and Kinross and Western Perthshire in 1959. He became Member of Parliament for Glasgow Rutherglen at a 1964 by-election (where he narrowly beat Norman Buchan at the Labour Party selection meeting). Jim Inglis (20 March 1928 – 20 November 2015) was a Scotland international rugby union footballer, who played as a Prop. Rugby union career Amateur career Inglis played for Selkirk. Inglis won the unofficial Scottish championship with Selkirk in the 1952-53 season as well as winning the Border League. During his time with the KOSB he played for their rugby side. {{primary sources, date=October 2011 The Glengarth Sevens was an annual 7 a-side rugby union tournament held at Davenport Rugby Club The first Glengarth Sevens was held in 1967 at Headlands Road, home of Davenport Rugby Club. Its celebrated its 21st anniversary in 1987 which was to be the last Glengarth Sevens held at Davenport rugby club. How it all began In June 1966 the North East Cheshire Society for Mentally Handicapped Children opened their day care centre at 'Glengarth' in Station Road, Marple, Stockport. Peebles Sevens
Peebles Sevens is an annual rugby sevens event held by Peebles RFC, in Peebles, Scotland. This was one of a group of Sevens tournaments instated after the First World War extending the original Borders Spring Circuit. The Peebles Sevens began in 1923. Due to a calendar change in 2016; the tournament was moved from end-of-season to start-of-season. Hence 2016 shows two winners:- one for 2015–16 season and one for 2016–17 season. Subsequent tournaments were held as start of season Sevens. The 2018 winner (for season 2018–19) is Melrose. The Peebles Sevens is part of the Kings of the Sevens championship run by the Border League. This event was one of the first Sevens tournaments in the Borders to run with a 12-person squad in 2018–19 season, as opposed to a 10-person squad. It also featured rolling substitutions. Jed-Forest Sevens is an annual rugby sevens event held by Jed-Forest RFC, in Jedburgh, Scotland. The Jed-Forest Sevens was the fourth of the Border Sevens tournaments to be instated, in 1894, after the Melrose Sevens (1883), Gala Sevens (1884) and the Hawick Sevens (1885). The Jed-Forest Sevens are traditionally the last tournament of the Kings of the Sevens competition. 2022's Jed-Forest Sevens will be played on 14 May.
