Seeve
Seeve is a river of Lower Saxony, Germany, a tributary of the Elbe. It is approximately long. The municipality of Seevetal is named after this river. Course The Seeve source located is near Wehlen, south-east of Undeloh in the northern part of the Lüneburg Heath at an elevation of about 67 metres. It passes Holm, Lüllau, Jesteburg, Bendestorf, Ramelsloh, Horst, Lindhorst, Hittfeld, Karoxbostel, Glüsingen, Maschen and Hörsten. It then flows into the Elbe between Over and Wuhlenburg. In Holm and Horst there are barrages to drive watermills. Just before joining the Elbe, the Seeve passes the natural reserve . Seevetal (Northern Low Saxon: ''Seevdaal'') is a municipality in the district of Harburg, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated approximately 20 km south of Hamburg, and 15 km west of Winsen (Luhe). Its seat is in the village Hittfeld. It is named after the river Seeve. History On 1 July 1972, the administrations of 19 independent smaller municipalities were merged to form the Seevetal municipality. The 19 towns and villages forming Seevetal are Beckedorf, Bullenhausen, Emmelndorf, Fleestedt, Glüsingen, Groß Moor, Helmstorf, Hittfeld, Holtorfsloh, Horst, Hörsten, Klein Moor, Lindhorst, Maschen, Meckelfeld, Metzendorf, Ohlendorf, Over and Ramelsloh. Jesteburg
Jesteburg is a municipality in the district of Harburg, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated approximately 25 km south of Hamburg, and 6 km east of Buchholz in der Nordheide. Jesteburg is also the seat of the ''Samtgemeinde'' ("collective municipality") Jesteburg. In Jesteburg lies the confluence of two small rivers, the Schmale Aue and the Seeve. History The first official mentioning of Jesteburg dates back to the year 1202, in a document signed by the Hartwig II, Archbishop of Bremen. The castle which gave the town its name is supposed to have guarded the Seeve passage until the 13th century. Remains of this ''Burg'' have not yet been found. Lüneburg Heath
Lüneburg Heath (german: Lüneburger Heide) is a large area of heath, geest, and woodland in the northeastern part of the state of Lower Saxony in northern Germany. It forms part of the hinterland for the cities of Hamburg, Hanover and Bremen and is named after the town of Lüneburg. Most of the area is a nature reserve. Northern Low Saxon is still widely spoken in the region. Lüneburg Heath has extensive areas, and the most yellow of heathland, typical of those that covered most of the North German countryside until about 1800, but which have almost completely disappeared in other areas. The heaths were formed after the Neolithic period by overgrazing of the once widespread forests on the poor sandy soils of the geest, as this slightly hilly and sandy terrain in northern Europe is called. Maschen
Maschen is a village in the municipality of Seevetal in Harburg district in the German state of Lower Saxony. It lies south of Hamburg on the northern edge of the Lüneburg Heath and within the commuter zone of the city of Hamburg. Maschen Marshalling Yard is the largest of its kind in Europe and the second biggest in the world. It was opened in 1977. With its 9,266 inhabitants (as at: 31 December 2005) Maschen is the second largest village in Seevetal. Maschen was first mentioned in the records in 1294 as ''Merschene'' ( Low German = end of the marsh). In 1671 the first school was built; it has moved location several times since.
