Seetha Molamure
Seetha "Sita" Seneviratne (''née'' Molamure) (1914–1998) was a Ceylonese politician. She was a member of the Senate of Ceylon and member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka for Balangoda. Early life and family Seetha was the only child of Sir Alexander Francis Molamure (the first speaker of both the State Council of Ceylon and Parliament of Ceylon) and Lady Adeline (the first female member of State Council of Ceylon). She married Leopold James de S. Seneviratne of the Ceylon Civil Service, who went on the serve as Secretary to the Treasury. Their children were Lakshman Chandra ( PC) and Sunethra who married Sepala Ilangakoon, the Chairman and Managing Director of Mackwoods Estates, as well as the Chairman of the Tea Board. Senate Of Ceylon
The Senate was the upper chamber of the parliament of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) established in 1947 by the Soulbury Commission. The Senate was appointed and indirectly elected rather than directly elected. It was housed in the old Legislative Council building in Colombo Fort and met for the first time on 12 November 1947. The Senate was abolished on 2 October 1971 by the eighth amendment to the Soulbury Constitution, prior to the adoption of the new Republican Constitution of Sri Lanka on 22 May 1972. In 2010 there were proposals to reintroduce the Senate. Dharmadasa Wanniarachchi
Dharmadasa Wanniarachchi ( si, ධර්මදාස වන්නිආරච්චි) (08 June 1921 - 5 October 2007) was a Sri Lankan politician. He was the seventh Governor of the North Western Province of Sri Lanka and a former member of the Sri Lankan Parliament. Born Wanni Arachchilage Dharmadasa, he was elected to the Parliament of Sri Lanka from Pelmadulla representing the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in a by election in 1965 succeeding W. A. Karunasena. He was re-elected in the 1970 general election and was appointed Deputy Minister of State Enterprises and Scientific Affairs in the Second Sirimavo Bandaranaike government. He lost his seat in the 1977 general election. He was elected in the 2000 general election and was appointed Governor of the North Western Province in 2004. Mallika Ratwatte
Mallika Eslin Ratwatte (née Ellawala) (13 April 1932 – 18 May 2017) was a Ceylonese politician. She was a Member of Parliament from the Balangoda electorate. Early life and family Born Mallika Eslin Ellawala, to the Radala Ellawala family in Ratnapura. She married Clifford Ratwatte, a planter who was the son of Barnes Ratwatte Dissawa, a member of the State Council of Ceylon and sister of Sirimavo Bandaranaike who would become Prime Minister of Ceylon. Political career Clifford Ratwatte entered politics in 1954 as member of Sri Lanka Freedom Party which was formed by his brother-in-law S.W.R.D. 1970 Ceylonese Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Ceylon in 1970. Background SLFP leader Sirimavo Bandaranaike had come to the conclusion that her party's best hope of power was forming a permanent alliance with Ceylon's Marxist parties. She assembled the SLFP, the Trotskyist LSSP, and the Communists into the United Front coalition. The UF's platform was called the ''Common Programme''; it featured extensive nationalization, a non-aligned foreign policy, expanded social programmes, and replacement of the British-imposed, monarchical Soulbury constitution with a republican constitution. The UNP government of Dudley Senanayake had not made much headway with Ceylon's twin problems of inflation and unemployment, nor had it attempted solving the linked problems of feudal property relations and adverse terms of trade by agrarian reform and industrialisation. Parliament Of Ceylon
The Parliament of Ceylon was the legislative body of British Ceylon & Dominion of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) established in 1947 by the Soulbury Constitution, prior to independence on 4 February 1948. Parliament replaced the State Council of Ceylon. Parliament was based on the Westminster model with an upper house, the Senate, whose members were indirectly elected or appointed, and a lower house, the House of Representatives, whose members were directly elected or appointed. The House of Representatives consisted of 101 members, of whom 95 were elected and six appointed by the Governor-General (increased to 157 in 1960, 151 elected and six appointed). The Senate consisted of 30 Members, of whom 15 were elected by the House of Representatives and 15 appointed by the Governor-General.
