The City of Salford () is a metropolitan borough within Greater Manchester, England. The borough is named after its main settlement, Salford. Weaste
Weaste () is a suburb in the City of Salford, Greater Manchester, England. In 2014, Weaste and Seedley ward had a population of 12,616. History Historically in Lancashire, it is an industrial area, with many industrial estates. The A57 (Eccles New Road) passes through Weaste, which lies close to the M602 motorway. Weaste is north of Salford Quays. The name is from Old French ''waste'' meaning "common land, waste". Textiles and the Industrial Revolution 19th century cotton firm Ermen & Engels—part-owned by the father of Friedrich Engels—established its second factory in 1837 near Weaste Station, on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway line. Friedrich worked for the factory in its offices near the Royal Exchange in Manchester. Seedley Railway Station
Seedley railway station is a disused station located in the Seedley area of Salford, on the former Liverpool and Manchester Railway. The station was opened by the London and North Western Railway on 1 May 1882. It was located where Langworthy Road crossed the railway on an overbridge. The station building was at road level with a footbridge running parallel to the road and three sets of stairs going down to the three platforms. The platforms were all to the west of the road, there was a central platform with running lines on both sides and outer platforms with one face to the railway. The northernmost platform had a signal box located half way along it. The station had no goods facilities, only handling passengers and parcels, it closed on 2 January 1956. The line is still open. Salford and Eccles is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2015 by Rebecca Long-Bailey, a member of the Labour Party. History The constituency was created following the Boundary Commission's Fifth Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies (ended 2008), and was first contested at the 2010 general election. Buile Hill Park
Buile Hill Park is a Grade II listed public park in Salford, Greater Manchester, England. Covering it is the largest public park in the city, as well as the second oldest after Peel Park. The park and mansion are owned by Salford City Council. The Friends of Buile Hill Park is a non-profit society which contributes to activities in the park and how it is managed. History In 1590, victims of the plague had been buried in Hart Hill Meadow, which had been bought by the local authorities. Harold Riley (artist)
Harold Francis Riley DL (born 21 December 1934), is an English artist. He sold his first painting to the Salford Museum and Art Gallery when he was 11. Biography Riley attended Salford Grammar School. In 1951 he won a scholarship to the Slade School of Fine Art, University College, London. After a one-year postgraduate course at the Slade he won a travel scholarship to Italy, followed by a British Council Scholarship to study in Spain, and went on to study in Florence and Spain before returning to Salford, where he has lived ever since. He completed his National Service as an officer in 1957. In 1960 Riley returned to Salford, where he still lives and works. He believed his main work was to document the city and his life-cycle in Salford in paintings, drawings and photographs. His deep affection for his home town cemented a friendship with L.S.
