Sedge Island
Sedge Island ( es, Isla Culebra) is one of the islands of the Falkland archipelago. Something of an outlier, it is due north of the large island of West Falkland and to the east of the Jason Islands. It is north east of Carcass Island and north west of Saunders Island. It is low-lying and covered in grass and tussock, including the sedges which give it its name. In 1978, Sedge Island was owned by Walter "Wally" McBeth, who tried to settle there with his wife and two daughters. Falkland Islands
The Falkland Islands (; es, Islas Malvinas, link=no ) is an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean on the Patagonian Shelf. The principal islands are about east of South America's southern Patagonian coast and about from Cape Dubouzet at the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, at a latitude of about 52°S. Time In The Falkland Islands
The Falkland Islands has officially used Falkland Islands Standard Time ( UTC−3) all year round since 5 September 2010. However, many residents of Camp use UTC−4, known on the Falklands as "Camp Time" (as opposed to "Stanley time" or "Government clocks"). The Falklands used Stanley Mean Time (UTC−3:51:24) until 11 March 1912 when Falkland Islands Time (FKT, UTC−4) came into effect. FKT was then used all year round until 25 September 1983 when Falkland Islands Summer Time (FKST, UTC−3) was first introduced for the summer period of the year. West Falkland
West Falkland ( es, Isla Gran Malvina) is the second largest of the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic. It is a hilly island, separated from East Falkland by the Falkland Sound. Its area is , 37% of the total area of the islands. Its coastline is long. Population The island has fewer than 200 people, scattered around the coastline. The largest settlement is Port Howard on the east coast, which has an airstrip. Other settlements include Albemarle, Chartres, Dunnose Head, Fox Bay, Fox Bay West, Hill Cove, Port Stephens, and Roy Cove, most of which are linked by road and also have airstrips and harbours. In 1986, the population was 265, in 2001, it had fallen to 144 and rose to 160 in 2016. Because West Falkland is outside Stanley or RAF Mount Pleasant on East Falkland it is considered part of the "camp", a Falklander term for the area outside the main settlement. Jason Islands
The Jason Islands (Spanish: ''Islas Sebaldes'') are an archipelago in the Falkland Islands, lying to the far north-west of West Falkland. Three of the islands, Steeple Jason, Grand Jason and Clarke's Islet, are private nature reserves owned by the Wildlife Conservation Society of New York City. Other islands in the group are National Nature Reserves owned by the Falkland Islands Government. Geography The islands include Steeple Island, Grand Island, Elephant Island, Flat Island and South Island. *Steeple Jason Island runs south-east to north-west. A narrow neck of land breaks the island into two sections, both with steep slopes on both sides. Carcass Island ( es, Isla del Rosario) is the largest of the West Point Island Group of the Falkland Islands. Description It lies north-west of West Falkland and south-east of the Jason Islands. Saunders Island, Falkland Islands
Saunders Island ( es, Isla Trinidad) is the fourth largest of the Falkland Islands, lying north west of West Falkland. The island is run as a sheep farm. The island has an area of and a coastline of . It is about from east to west and almost that distance from north-east to south-west. It consists of three peninsulas linked by narrow necks, and it has three large upland areas. The highest point, Mount Richards, is high. History Port Egmont on the island was the site of the first British settlement, established in 1765. Unaware of the French presence at Port Louis, in January 1765, British captain John Byron explored and claimed Saunders Island, at the western end of the Falkland Islands, where he named the harbour of Port Egmont, and sailed near other islands, which he also claimed for King George III.
