Sebastian The Fox
''The Adventures of Sebastian the Fox'' is a 1963 Australian children's series. The show combined a string puppet, a mischievous fox named Sebastian, who was placed in real-life settings. It was among the first shows of its kind produced in Australia, as it was very different from earlier Australian children's series like ''Peters Club'' and ''Tarax Show''. The Sebastian puppet was designed and operated by puppeteer Peter Scriven. The music was composed by George Dreyfus, who became a leading Australian composer. The score was subsequently arranged by Dreyfus for various small ensemble combinations for performance by young musicians as a complete concert. Tim Burstall
Timothy Burstall AM (20 April 1927 – 19 April 2004) was an English Australian film director, writer and producer, best known for hit Australian movie ''Alvin Purple'' (1973) and its sequel ''Alvin Rides Again''. Burstall's films featured early appearances by many legendary Australian actors including Jack Thompson, Bruce Spence, Jacki Weaver, ''Alvin'' star Graeme Blundell, John Waters and Judy Davis. Speaking just after Burstall's death, David Williamson said that Burstall "couldn't stomach" Australia's lack of a film industry. "He was determined to do something about it and he had the energy and spirit to do it. (He) was a very important cultural figure: highly intelligent, widely read, with a succinct and often highly controversial opinion on everything." George Dreyfus
George Dreyfus AM (born 22 July 1928) is an Australian contemporary classical, film and television composer. Early life and orchestral career Dreyfus was born to a Jewish family in Elberfeld, Wuppertal, Germany. He was the younger of two sons born to Alfred Dreyfus and Hilde Ransenberg. Growing up, his family had what he described as "pots of money, cars, ''Kindermädchen'' anniesand holidays in Switzerland and Czechoslovakia". Giorgio Mangiamele
Giorgio Mangiamele (13 August 192613 May 2001) was an Italian/Australian photographer and filmmaker who made a unique contribution to the production of Australian art cinema in the 1950s and 1960s. His films included ''Il Contratto'' (or ''The Contract'') (1953), ''The Spag'' (1962), ''Ninety Nine Per Cent'' (1963) and ''Clay'' (1965). ''Clay'' was selected for competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 1965. In 2011 the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia restored four of his most notable films and Ronin Films released them on DVD. Peters Club
''Peters Club'' was an Australian children's television series which reportedly debuted in 1958, and aired on GTV-9, running into 1959. At the time, many Australian TV series were only broadcast on a single station instead of being networked, which may have also been the case with the series. Cast included Rod McLennan, Judy Banks and the comedian Joff Ellen, who was concurrently playing a schoolboy on the early sitcom ''Take That.'' There is very little information available on this show but it is known that the now-defunct ''Truth'' newspaper gave it an award for "Best Children's Show - Melbourne Television". Notably, it was produced by Crawford Productions. The title, without a possessive apostrophe, referenced the sponsor - Peters Ice Cream (which also used the TV clowns Zig and Zag, who wore ice cream cone hats on HSV-7). ''The Tarax Show'' was an early Australian children's TV program on GTV-9 in Melbourne running from 1957 to 1969. Synopsis Denzil Howson who was then Assistant Program Manager at GTV9, was asked by Norman Spencer to develop a daily children's program. A pilot of the show was kinescope recorded onto film. The program started on Melbourne's GTV-9 on 21 January 1957 (only two days after the official opening of GTV9), debuting from the Myer Emporium Lonsdale St store window, as the GTV9 studios in Bendigo Street, Richmond were still under construction. Normally the program was produced from GTV-9, but some editions were taped at ATN-7 in Sydney to help build the audience there. Peter Scriven
Peter Scriven MBE (1930–1998) was the founding artistic director of the Marionette Theatre of Australia. Background and legacy Scriven played a huge role in establishing puppetry as a serious artform in Australia. His ''Tintookies'' and ''Little Fella Bindi'' toured all over Australasia. The Tintookies, from an Aboriginal word meaning 'little people who come from the sandhills', was an elaborate marionette musical first staged by creator Peter Scriven at the Elizabethan Theatre in Sydney in 1956. After the success of this production, Tintookie became the generic name for any of the puppets used by the Marionette Theatre of Australia, formed by Scriven under the auspices of the Elizabethan Theatre Trust in 1965. The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), known as ScreenSound Australia from 1999 to 2004, is Australia's audiovisual archive, responsible for developing, preserving, maintaining, promoting and providing access to a national collection of film, television, sound, radio, video games, new media, and related documents and artefacts. The collection ranges from works created in the late nineteenth century when the recorded sound and film industries were in their infancy, to those made in the present day.
